Rarely does a book as concise as this cover a subject to the depth this work does. I am happy to have read it and become acquainted with a lost world. Very readable for a thoroughly researched academic work. Any teacher working on a syllabus dealing with colonialism should consider using it.

蒸気船やスエズ運河がまだ存在せず、アジアとヨーロッパの往来に手間と時間がかかっていた17-18世紀のインドネシアを中心に、本国から送られたオランダ人男性を取り込みながら「母系」的に存続していく欧亜混血社会と、ヨーロッパでもアジアでもない特異な貴族的・退廃的な生活様式が形成された。1983年に出版され、2009年に第2版が出た本書は、この混血社会の生成と崩壊のプロセスと実態を詳細に描き、最後まで退屈させない。
