Veteran Chicago guitarist John Primer teams up with Arizona's beloved emissary of the blues, Bob Corritore, for a knock-out session of classic Windy City blues. The session covers material from the songbooks of Little Walter, Robert Lockwood Jr., Willie Dixon, Jimmy Reed and Lightnin' Hopkins, among many others, and features a crack team of A-list musicians including guitarists Billy Flynn and Chris James, pianist Barrelhouse Chuck, bassists Bob Stroger and Patrick Rynn, as well as Kenny "Beedy Eyes" Smith and Brian Fahey on drums.

old time Chicago blues done by pros
In the cover photo these two guys look like a car salesman and a Elvis impersonator, but don't be fooled, these guys are very good blues musicians. Their back up band is full-on professional as well and they all work very well together as a well balanced team. All these talented and very skilled people working together in one place is a minor miracle and the tunes they have chosen are refreshing to me. The music is more like that from the 50tes and 60tes, and would be very good to dance to.

Chicago Blues at its Best
Knockin' Around These Blues I got an advance copy of this CD from the band's publicist for review purposes. One quick glimpse at this CD is all it takes to know that this one is a keeper. The combination of guitar and harmonica is a classic setup in traditional Chicago Blues and when it comes to John Primer and Bob Corritore blues enthusiasts know that we are talking about the cream of the crop. After digging just a bit deeper I found that the band was equally impressive. Barrelhouse Chuck, Chris James, Patrick Rynn, Bob Stroger, Billy Flynn, Brian Fahey and Kenny "Beedy Eyes" Smith are all headliners in their own right. Bring them together for a recording session and the result has got to be nothing less than mind-blowing. Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to Chicago in the 1950s. To recreate a sound like this in this day and age you would nearly have to resurrect the dead. Turn it up, close your eyes and it would be easy to imagine yourself sitting in Theresa's Lounge. This is an all-star cast of players, each among the top in his field. The song selection reflects what might well have been heard during that era as well. Even the originals gave the sound and feel of that time period. This is Chicago Blues at its best. It is obvious that the band is not only enjoying themselves but giving 100%. This is traditional style blues played from the heart with passion, fire and finesse. If you are a lover of blues in the traditional style, Knockin' Around These Blues is one of those pieces you should add to your collection. You will not be disappointed. I found it to be a rare treat. Having been writing reviews for going on twenty years it is not often that something like this crosses my desk. I give it two thumbs up and find myself wishing I had more thumbs.

An Instant Classic!
Congratulations to Bluesman John Primer and Delta Groove Music, who have teamed up for a session of classic Chicago Blues of the absolutely highest caliber!Guitarist/Singer John Primer has been a force on the Blues scene since the 1970s. He had stints in the bands of Muddy Waters, Magic Slim, and others. He's recorded a number of fine sessions under his own name. This one really takes it to another level, and if there is any justice, this will be an award winner in 2013. I've always been very impressed with John Primer as a guitarist. He's equally adept at playing slide and picking the guitar. On this recording, his singing is outstanding as well, and he seems to have somehow taken the vocals up a notch! He's always been a good singer, but on this one he sings with so much authority, confidence, and at times even the swagger of one of his mentors, the great Muddy Waters.Primer is backed by an all star cast of supporting musicians. Bob Corritore plays some fine harmonica throughout. Barrelhouse Chuck on piano calls to mind legends Sunnyland Slim and Pinetop Perkins. Chris James, who I'm not as familiar with, plays second guitar on most tracks and has the Jimmy Rogers sound down pat. There is absolutely no filler on this CD. My favorites would have to be The Clock, When I Get Lonely, Little Boy Blue, and Just Like I Treat You but every single track is great! If you are a fan of the Classic Chicago Blues sound, do not hesitate to buy this, crank it up, and be prepared to get goosebumps! I think somewhere Muddy Waters is listening to this one and smiling down on his protege.I do hope there will be more from John Primer and Delta Groove in the future!

Genuine Chicago Bluesman
This was a gift for a great buddy of mine, with whom I go to a lot of live gigs, and he loves it. We saw John Primer at a blues festival in Spain, and he is the genuine Chicago Blues article. If you are blues fans, try this.

OUTSTANDING!
I can't decide which is the best pure "kickin'" blues album of the year this one or James Cotton's latest. If you are looking for non stop smokin' blues buy both!
