A lovely, quiet microwave
Three years later, I'm still very happy with this microwave. I live in an apt bldg with flimsy floors, and the microwave that was already installed in the kitchen had an incredibly loud exhaust fan, a loud beep and no mute button. The Breville is as quiet as a microwave can be. The fan tends to keep running after you're done nuking, but I think that's part of its quietness - the fan runs longer so it doesn't have to blow as hard.I remember reading reviews that said the door auto-close function may not last - mine lasted for about 2 years. It's not a big deal having to give the door a little shove to close it the rest of the way, and it still closes very quietly. This microwave has lots of functions for smarter cooking but I'm not using any so can't comment. Cooking times are about the same as with other microwaves - instructions on packages tend to be spot-on. I do think the Breville does a better job of heating food evenly than I remember with my last microwave.

soft-close door is genius
Works great, simple, and not only is the door a quiet-close, it is soft-close too, meaning you can swing the door closed at various speeds and it stops and slowly closes it the last inch or so with hardly any noise. The beeps have a nice tone and are adjustable. We needed simple knobs and operation with competent power and this fit the bill great. The display screen is nice looking in operation. The engineering is impressive on the aspects a user sees and feels. Time will tell for longevity.

Nice piece of equipment
Great microwave, works as it should, looks good, relatively quiet and fast. We've had it for about a year now, and it seems solid as a rock. The door closes nearly silently once you find the trick. We haven't used most of the complicated menu functions, and don't care about them. The overall impression is very high build quality. Hopefully, I'm right about that.

Started breaking down 12 months in, fully bricked 18 months in, out of warranty
This is an attractive microwave, gives a higher-end feel to one of the typically less attractive appliances in your kitchen. Functions are nice, I especially liked how easy it was to fidget with the power to accomplish whatever job you needed to. Presets were OK, but never found them to be the one-button solutions that they promised to be (for instance, the soften butter and popcorn functions never quite left me with soft butter or fully popped popcorn). But one star because this $400 microwave, maybe the most expensive microwave money can buy in modern America, had minor flaws from day one and then major flaws starting a year in.The minor flaws were things like the soft close door not working, which meant the door wouldn't close at all, which meant I couldn't use the microwave. Had to unplug the unit and reset some sort of internal electronics to get the door to function again. Annoying, but rare enough that we lived with it.The major flaw was that starting around a year in, we would sometimes pull the food out and it was cold. This started as an intermittent problem that was definitely annoying and enough to swear me off of buying this microwave ever again, but we learned to live with it. Fast forward another six months and we'd gone from cold food once/week grew to once/day and then 90% of the time that we tried to use it. In essence, we now have a microwave that will turn food in a circle for as long as you ask it to, but not cook it.An appliance breaking down a year into owning it is frustrating enough, but sadly somewhat accepted in an era of mass produced cheap consumer goods. But when you buy the top-of-the line, you expect it to be an exception to that rule. Or you at least expect the company to stand by its product and offer a replacement so early into its life. Unfortunately, neither were the case here. I'm already outside of the paltry 1-year limited warranty, so customer service gave me the options to A. send it in and pay for a repair myself or B. buy a new one. I'll be buying a new one and it won't be a Breville.

The inverter style microwave is much better than the older units
Much better than previous generation. We had an older BREVILLE microwave that worked great but wanted to purchase a new one that was an “inverter” style. Previous our microwave would pulse off and on depending on the level of power you wanted to use - - basically all still full power but the on and off is their way of accomplishing a varied temperature. NOW - the inverter style actually lowers the microwave energy being produced to provide the level of temperature. This means the food cooks evenly and produces better results. This also aids with the special programs for defrosting, warming, selected food items, etc. The unit also has a soft-close door - a gentle push and the door engages the latch and closes - no loud bam. The interior is a lighted bright stainless steel finish. Every time we use it, we say, “boy we should have bought this sooner”
