Save money and use the old-fashioned water meter
I've used this Waterstick meter for about a year now and just recently went back to the old-fashioned meter that's simpler, more accurate and easier to use. Oh, and less expensive ($17.98 vs. $6.99)! I bought the Waterstick at Bushnell Gardens Nursery in Granite Bay, California, where the gardening expert assured me I'd be very happy with the meter. The meter is somewhat accurate, but the flashing colored lights are, at times, difficult to discern. In other words, it's difficult to tell when the meter is flashing yellow or orange. I don't like having to turn the meter on & off. Do yourself a favor and just buy a water meter where you stick it in your pot and it tells you whether your plant needs water or not. Keep it simple and inexpensive.

Dubious accuracy
The WaterStik is a great concept. It is simple and easy to use, looks nice and is inexpensive. But in my experience it just does not work. I tried it in two different house plants, at different depths in the soil and in both cases it signals the need for watering almost immediately -- regardless of how long it had been since I had watered the plant. I took it to a friend who is a master gardener who had just water her poinsettia by submerging the root ball in a bucket. Within minutes after insertion in the soil it started blinking -- indicating the need for watering.I emailed the manufacturer two weeks ago and have not had a response.

It's what you need
What all can I say? It works. My favorite feature is the multiple lights, drowning the plant blue, perfect green, keep an eye out yellow, and feed me red! At least that's what I think when I see the colors...

nice idea, not durable
I've been using a single waterstik on several outdoor plants for about four months. Shoving it into the soil so many times eventually wore the thin insulating layer off the sensor. The sensor is no longer accurate now that the bare copper is exposed. It's a nice bit of technology, which unfortunately requires a fragile design. It is probably OK if you plan to put it in a single plant and never move it.So I'm back to shoving dry wooden stakes in the ground and seeing if they come out moist.

Gamble with it lasting...
Ordered five and all worked as they should, but two failed. Replacing the battery was not the problem. Besides that feel comfortable with the information they provide for over watering protection.

Waterstiks work ok
This product works best for plants that need to get pretty dry before needing to be watered again. For plants that need to stay moist I find it doesn't give an accurate reading, so it is very easy to over or under water. If you decide to try it out do not order it from Grady's Online. I ordered three and only two arrived in working condition. I've e-mailed and phoned them and not heard back - VERY FRUSTRATING!

Works for a while then fails due to poor manufacturing
I bought four of the 6" WaterStiks a few months ago, at first they worked fine but three of them have failed since.Humidity got in between the layers of the printed circuit board and corroded the sensor's electrode leading to wildly inaccurate readings ( read as overwatered even though the soil was too dry ).
