Highly recommended.
This very large book is packed with detailed information about the Royal Navy, her ships, men, guns &c. from 1793 until 1815. Everything you would need to know about how the Navy operated during Nelson's time. Highly recommended.

What's new in the "revised & updated" edition?
Nelson's Navy, The Ships, Men and Organisation 1793-1815, by Brian Lavery, foreword by Patrick O'Brian, revised and updated edition, 2012 (ISBN 9781844861750).There is little I could add to the many reviews already posted on this excellent volume. First published in 1989, revised in 1990, reprinted many times since, and now a new edition in 2012, with reprints already in 2013, this book remains the most useful single-volume reference available. So what has been revised and updated in this new edition? On page 324, the author has added an afterword in which he explains what has been revised or rewritten, notably the whole chapter on Fleet Tactics. Also a new section of colour illustrations has been added, 24 pages in all, which definitely enhance this already excellent book.

A far better alternative is "The Trafalgar Companion" by Mark Adkin
Information in the book is somewhat outdated in the way it is presented.A far better alternative is "The Trafalgar Companion" by Mark Adkin. Contrary to what the title likes you to believe, the book is not only about Trafalgar.
