Why this wins in a comparison of available options
I have used a number of these kinds of things and lately bought a couple of different options to see if I could improve on what I had. This one comes out ahead of the pack by a good margin, and improves quite a bit on the classic magnifying headset style. There's what seems like a thousand different options on amazon for various magnifiers, all of which look almost identical yet seem to have pretty stark differences in price, quality, reviews and so forth. So, I hope I can clear up some of the confusion for those in the market for one of these. My primary contenders were the classic welder style Donegan Optivisor here: Donegan OptiVISOR LX And various Optivisor copies like this:SE MH1047L: SE MH1047L LED Head Magnifier (Has more features like LED , with acrylic lenses)and MagnifyLabs Headband Magnifier (Less features, comes with glass lenses)And then the "Modern style" like this unit I'm reviewing. Most of the other modern implementations seemed to have too many quality issues / poor ratings to consider so I figured I'd start here. Here's the drawbacks of the classic Optivisor style:1. By the time you get the LED and Magnifier for the Donegan to provide the features this unit gives for under $20 you’re up to about $85 in total. (The Donegan LP1 magnifier attachment and the Quasar LED light attachment). If you want lenses they are ~$25 a pop! Add 5 of them, and you are looking at a $200 investment2. Most of the Donegan rip-offs either come with no extra lenses and LED, some extra lenses but no LED, or an LED but no extra lenses. It's difficult to evaluate the lense quality definitively based upon the reviews.3. Some come with a magnifying loupe which I find fiddly and difficult to work with one eye closed like that just to get additional magnification.4. The extra lenses attach either via screw (annoying and time consuming) or "popping in" via a plastic nub (likely to break in time).5. The rear adjustment knob tends to be really difficult to turn, to the point that I was concerned I would break it. This makes getting a nice snug fit and then removing it when your done really aggravating. Now that you see why I was looking for better options.Let's see why I chose this one:1. This model comes standard with five high quality thick lenses of varying magnification levels that should be perfect for almost any application.2. Good lenses! Do not write this off due to the acrylic lenses! I see them universally hated, but the scuffing is not an issue when you have a case to keep them tidy. In addition, I find less eye strain with these acrylic lenses compared to the glass lenses. I think it has more to do with the quality of the acrylic or glass rather than being one or the other.3. Comes with a lint-free cloth to wipe off the lenses4. The lenses can be adjusted more than 90 degrees and be flipped up very easily when not in use5. The lenses snap in and out very easily6. The magnifier has a built in LED lamp with conveniently located on off button.7. the LED has a wide range of adjustment as well, ~45 degrees8. All of the adjustments are fluid, have set screws for varying tension and are head and shoulders above Donegan for ease of use9. Comes with a lense holder which is fantastic for preventing scratching and wear to the lenses when not in use (don’t underestimate the value of this!)10. It comes both with eyeglasses style temples and a wraparound headband depending on your preferences.(Fun fact I learned today: the shaft of glasses from the hinge to the piece which wraps around the ear is called the temple, which I find kind of counterintuitive)11. The wraparound headband makes this functional for those who wear glassesNow some potential snags:1. The 3x AAA batteries for the LED were not included... but hey for under $15 delivered let’s not get greedy. Get some here: AmazonBasics AAA Performance Alkaline Batteries (36 Count) 2. The bridge which rests on the nose may not be perfect for your particular nose or provide some irritation, however it’s easily bent into a more comfortable shape and id also recommend to get some silicone pads to increase comfort: Gms Optical® 1.3mm Ultra-Thin Anti-Slip Adhesive Contoured Silicone Eyeglass Nose Pads with Super Sticky Backing - 5 Pair (Black) Point being is that everyone who wears glasses knows you have to adjust a bit to get the best fit. I don’t consider this a drawback or defect- just par for the course. You can use the spares for sunglasses or eyeglasses. I love these things. If you wear anything for long enough it’ll start to bug you... so you may also want to cut up some of the remaining silicon pads to place strategically around the ears, the forehead where the battery cover attaches etc. Taking a moment to really make it just right for your particular cranium is worth it. Again, not the manufacturers responsibility to fit every head on the planet perfectly- it’s unrealistic.I've located another unit which looks to be almost identical to this in black that appears to have a better nose bridge, but "better" might be different for everyone. I'm unsure if the quality is the same as this unit. The lenses appear to be different. I wouldn't recommend it until I actually had an opportunity to test for myself, but feel free to take a look: CAPOLUS Head Mount Magnifier Eyewear with 2 LED Professional Jeweler's Loupe Light Bracket & Headband are Interchangeable 5 Replaceable Lenses: 1.0X, 1.5X, 2.0X, 2.5X, 3.5X for Seniors, Hobbyists You might want to buy both and return the one that's not best for you. If you do, let me know how it went.3. Because the lenses don't have a plastic frame around them, if you use your fingers to raise or lower the them you may smudge the lenses a bit. I just tend to use the back of my hand or just keep the microfiber cloth handy in my breast pocket. This just takes some getting used to. However most of the time if I start doing something else I just remove the glasses completely. If the manufacturer is listening I think having a plastic border around the frames would go a long way, or at least a tab for raising and lowering the lenses.4. Some are really adverse to magnifiers which don't have “blinders” on the sides necessary to focus your vision... I know some who feel this way. Most of them began using them as engineers or watch repair quite some time ago when they were the only option and they just “feel right” to them. I’m not one of those people. If you are, I’d urge you to try this anyway and see what you think. You might be pleasantly surprised. Conclusions:It’s really tough to complain about a unit that makes its pricey competition look like children’s toys. So take my few caveats more as suggestions for optimal results rather than real dissatisfactions. It’s amazing that a box of AAA batteries and the nose pads cost more than this item delivered.I see it as no contest between this item and the competition in build quality and convenience even considering some of the drawbacks I detailed. The welder style magnifiers are pricey, fiddly, don’t adjust easily, the rear tension adjustment always tends to jam up on me and their lense quality is all over the map. Sure they have a nice head pad on some but that can easily be realized on this for $5 and some ingenuity. As far as shopping around: The magnifiers are sold here under a variety of different names and at a variety of price points but they are almost all rebranded versions of the identical thing. However, some do have material differences so be sure to review closely before pulling the trigger on another listing that appears to have a lower price. This was the lowest cost with Prime shipping option at the time of writing.Anyhow, I’m keeping these and not looking back. Magnifier makes work easier and fun!
I LOVE THIS! I paint miniatures and this magnifier makes my hobby so much more pleasurable. The headband sits comfortably on my small head and having the light is an extra bonus. I haven't used all the magnifications yet, but glad to know I have them if I need them. I wear glasses and if I wanted to could wear the headband magnifier with my prescription if I wanted, however haven't needed to. These make painting easier then using one of the big round magnifying lights. I don't second guess where my brush is landing and can really get the details right!!! This has also stopped my eyes from getting tired after several hours of work.

Finally found something that works
These work perfect for close work projects! I showed it too a friend that is suffering from Macular Degeneration and she teared up when she put them on and could read things that she couldn't even with her RX glasses. Not saying that this is a treatment for her disease. But seeing her face light up when putting them on, I am buying another pair for her. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because they are a little heavy on the bridge of my nose.
