Substance Abuse: Information for School Counselors, Social Workers, Therapists, and Counselors

I really enjoyed this material. Having previously worked in Drug Court, and having seen some negatively/classist practices employed in the treatment of substance use disorders, I felt this book was both balanced and progressive. In countries such as Chile, the state employs a Harm Reduction model that has been shown to yield more long-term compliance with substance free (yes, abstinent) lifestyles. This book doesn't proselytize the harm reduction model, but it provides pros and cons for both models while highlighting some of the historic inadequacy in our American treatment system. This is a dense book, and it covers a variety within substances and substance recovery systems. I recommend as a great textbook. For independent reading, it might be challenging without proper motivation.

I am using this book for my substance abuse course in college. I have enjoyed this textbook. The book is easy to read and it is very educational. I highly recommend it.
