Excellent product that functions nicely and looks good.
I've used a set of these (3 tall like sold here) now for two summers and am very pleased with it. Each compartment is big enough for a small to medium sized plant and it is easy to water the plants. Over-watering is also not a concern as the excess simply runs out. I did not use the included chain or tray. Instead I bought a threaded metal pole at a big box hardware store. I think the pole is 6 ft long but I don't remember for sure as one end is in the ground. Part way up the pole I have a nut with a big washer on it. The planters sit on that and the top end of the pole sticks up through the bottom of the top planter just enough to put a washer and nut on (just to ensure the planter does not get knocked off the pole). I bought the thickest pole that would fit to ensure the set up was sturdy enough. It looks pretty neat. The first year we planted strawberries. They did okay and on some nights when it got cold out I just unscrewed the top nut and moved the stack of plants into the garage. This past summer we planted a variety of flowers which looked really nice. I'll probably do that again next year.

Buy a traditional flower pot.
Works well. It was smaller than I thought. You can only grow smaller plants and herbs. Has to be placed in a very sunny area. You will have to rotate the planter often so that all plants get good light.

Plant it wisely to reap the benefits of each planter
Saw this in a few catalogs and thought about ordering it many times. On a whim, I saw it here on Amazon. YAY!Note: this item is plastic. It looks, however, like cement/concrete/terra cotta -- but is much lighter because it IS plastic. The 3 sections are removable and you can use them by themselves (Outside, I would say, unless you want water all over the floor)I have no complaints about this at all -- many people said that it drains too quickly into the bottom sections -- however, if you plan accordingly and put the right plants needing the right conditions, you will be very happy. Here is an example of one way to use this system in a wise way: We use the top layer for miniature succulents, and miniature figurines, adding blue sand for a "lake of water" and green sand for "grass". We then add more water-thirsty plants to the other levels, and add similar figurines to carry out the theme. It is really nice -- and when I have a chance, I will upload a picture!I did not like the chain to 'hang' this. The pot is quite heavy when full of soil and the chain looks a little too chintzy to support that weight. That is the reason for the 4 star rather than 5.

Not a good planter
The top lawyer was dry, water never reached it. Not enough room for plants

for parsley plants and butterflies
You may think I'm a nut, but I bought this product for the sole reason of planting multiple parsley plants, so black swallowtail butterflies will have a place to lay their eggs. It started by accident on one plant out on my deck. The butterflies are beneficial pollinators so i decided helping to raise them was a cool thing to do. So I searched amazon to find the perfect planter, and this is it. I enjoy watching the caterpillars grow and change into different life stages as the eat the parsley from the three different tiers. The entire container stays neat and green all spring and summer. (caterpillars naturally trim it down) -And then it can be brought inside during the winter to keep the plants going. They don't topple over in the wind, stay put on top of each other even when I carry them around by the pool and around the deck, and the color is neutral, -they look very pretty. I have two filled with parsley and caterpillars now and next year plan on buying at least 6 more because I have so much fun with my "crazy new hobby".

Solid plastic as strong as it says, drains well!
This is strong. I'm not worried about it falling. This is plastic, which is meh. I'd prefer something else or have it certified recycled or something.. Plastic doesn't biodegrade. But for the rice there wasn't anything else to get the job done. I have it hanging by my window in my kitchen with carnivorous plants in it. I read it doesn't drain as well as said and was counting on it. BuT it does drain fine. So two of my three types of carnivorous plants are doing great with the well drained peat and sand soil. I dislike how this thing tilts. And if you water it A LOT I think it would drop out of the bottom dray if u walked away and didn't come back(I see it and either soak some up or pour it out before that). I would buy it again if there's nothing better available yet. Tilting is the only real thing that bothers me about this. If it didn't tilt when hung(tilts 1-2 inches in any particular direction unless u correct weight with rocks) it would be 4 stars. If it wasn't made of plastic 5.

While pretty, not practical
I saw this at a local nursery last year but they had none left so I ordered it online from Amazon after I had already planted all my herbs so I could try it this year. I bought two and neither came with chains as advertised. While Amazon offered to replace them, it was too much trouble since I really wasn't going to use the chain but it was the principle. Anyway, calls to the company went unreturned. I kept them but did not use them till this year. While they do look nice stacked, I agree also, they would be too heavy to hang, I am not happy with the way my herbs grow. I bought several kinds and filled the areas with soil and the herbs. Any leftover herbs were planted in a regular rectangular container using the same leftover soil. Frankly, the ones in the regular container (and they used the same soil as the stacked ones) were much bigger and fuller. The herbs planted in the stacked tiers did not do as well. I had to constantly rotate both planters to get the full effect of the sun but a few died and were way smaller than the large container. Too much dirt was wasted in the middle of the planter and it seemed there was less room in the little sections and not much room for mobility. All is not lost however, I am replanting the herbs left into the larger rectangular planters but have decided to repurpose these stackers. I will add styrofoam and spanish moss and add fake flowers.
