supremely delicious
in reading the reviews of this product with the standard power supply, i came across a lot of comments based on inaccurate understanding of what this item does. so before i review its performance, let me break down its function.this piece of gear is a passive switching box coupled with a powered phono preamp, all run through a volume control. another way of looking at it is that it's a passive preamp with a powered phono amp.if you're still confused, keep reading. otherwise, skip to the next paragraph.. what this unit does is let you connect 4 sources to it (one is turntable only) and then select which of those sources you would like to send on through the output. the volume control controls the volume (duh..) of whichever source is selected. you can only play one source at a time. you cannot mix them. this is not a mixer. all input and output adapters are rca jacks, which are those things on the back of real audio equipment. if you need to connect to a device with a small headphone jack, you'll just need to use the included y-cable (although you'll need some sort of extender, more than likely). this unit does not make a signal louder. that is what an amplifier does. you will need one of those. if your amp/receiver/whatever doesn't have any sort of input, this item is useless for you. this, finally, is just something that lets you connect a bunch of crap to an amplifier (or anything with an input) while allowing you to control which crap is playing through and how loudly said crap is playing.performance of this unit is very solid. i found the phono preamp to sound better on my system than the ART DJPRE II Phono Preamplifier RCA Type Input and Output Switchable Low Cut Filter , a good performing, low cost phono preamp itself. the sound was much more natural, with a lighter, easier feel to the movement of the music. frequency response seems flat and complete, with maybe a bit too much lightness in the treble.the selectors for the sources operate very smoothly and silently, and the volume is also silent. one complaint that i read about in reviews of this unit was the stepped volume knob. i don't know if they changed the design, or if the steps in my attenuator are weak, but it seems to be continuously variable on mine, with no steps. i like that.this unit is a solid, clear piece of audio equipment. it does what it says it will do, and it does it simply and clearly. this is no audiophile manna from heaven, but it does support the building of a competent 2 channel stereo system, allowing good sources to play clearly through a good amp and good speakers. this piece of the system doesn't bring much with it. which is its beauty. it just makes the connections and gets out of the way.5 stars for super value, solid construction, and above average performance.
