Big Java: Compatible with Java 5, 6 and 7

The structure of this book is amazing, it really progresses in a logical fashion. I have found it more informative than any Java tutorial/lesson book/video series I've found. It's a fantastic resource for people who know Java - if you happen to forget the concept behind something, chances are Big Java covers it. Granted, some things get technical, naturally, but rereading the passage with a closer look will typically solve the comprehension issue. I recommend this to everyone I meet that wants to learn Java, and will continue to do so.

I like that there's a good amount of information in here, but my only gripe about the book is that it frequently references outside material (things that are not contained in the book). Does a good job of explaining programming basics for those new to it, but is easily skimmable for those who have some experience. They dont hide advanced stuff amid a bunch of basic instruction, so if you instantly recognize that you know how something is done, but just want to know the Java way, you can safely skip to the good part.

I had to get this book for an undergraduate class.This book assumes you already have a basic knowledge of Java. While I found the chapters easy to understand, the exercises at the end of each chapter requires knowledge that wasn’t in the chapter you just read. You will either Google the information to solve the problem(s) or refer to another book.There are better resources for learning Java and that are more beginner friendly.

I liked this text as an introduction to the language. Sometimes more generalized to beginning programming, which is great, but with enough meat, in terms of Java classes etc to be a handy reference. If you want to learn Computer Science, this is a good start. The Java/Oracle docs can be found online.

Quality of book is good as new. Same covered as classroom book. Very great price.

Programming was a great class, and this was a great book to learn it with. It contains all the basics lessons and exercises to help you learn how to write Java programs. You could do a lot worse than this book for class.
