North American Boletes: A Color Guide to the Fleshy Pored Mushrooms

If you want to understand and ID boletes, you need this guide
The most extensive, in-depth book on boletes yet. Goes as in depth (and breadth - not all North American mushroom field guides cover the number of known boletes as expansively as Bessette's book does) as one can hope for, and has beautiful, large photographs to aid in the identification process. If you're hesitating on purchasing this because of the price, I'd recommend you go ahead and take the chance - the knowledge you'll gain is worth far more than the price charged.

Very Comprehensive, Yet accessible to a hobbyist.
This is a very detailed guide for intermediate mushroom hunters. The descriptions are thorough, the content is very comprehensive. I currently have not found any species in my area (North Georgia) not covered. This is NOT a beginners guide. The pictures are not diagnostic, the keys however are. Beginning mushroom hunters should look to any number of other guides available in a more traditional field guide. I will be purchasing the other books by the same press pertinent to my area.

Great book to help identify boletes--not for beginners.
This is a really good book if you are with your mushroom club and want to decide about the identity of a puzzling bolete. It is too heavy to carry it with you when foraging but a great book to have back at the car when you finish foraging and want to make sure of the identity of your find.

Excellent field guide
Boletes are sometimes hard to identify, and this field guide is so helpful to an amateur mushroom forager like me. I like the paperback because it's easier to pack into the woods than the larger, heavier hardback version. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about boletes.

Take your bolete ID to the next level
After a few years of collecting boletes and hitting lots of dead ends in my generalized field guides, I bit the bullet and got this book. No single field guide can include every North American mushroom (let alone boletes), there's just too many. This book is what I needed to fill the big gap in my ability to ID boletes.

North American Boletes
Alan Bessette was my teacher this past summer (2013) at The Humboldt Field Research Institute, Maine. The text is a well written and includes beautiful color documentation - type photographs of these fungi. The taxonomic keys are very well written and aid in the identification of Boletes, especially for beginning students. The text covers field and lab equipment and procedures as well as fungi biology and ecology for each species.

A good guide to boletes
A good guide to boletes, but not the definitive source. Check SEVERAL guides AND LOCAL authorities on the boletes in YOUR area.
