If you can only buy one of Jan Beaney and Jean Littlejohn's books this isthe one I'd recommend. It isn't one of the smaller, numbered booklets buthas 104+ pages of great information and many color photos.The book is divided into two parts. First, design is investigated in sucha way that you want to run outside with sketchbook and pen. The secondpart covers the actual fabric embellishment with paints, applique, stitches, and machine embroidery.A glossary and index makes this a first-turn-to choice for a quick answer. On those days when inspiration drags its heels I open thisbook to remember why I love needlework!

Excellent demonstration of how to use drawing skills to design and create embroidery.Less focus on technical stitching issues and more on the translation of visually interesting images and textures to fabric with needle and thread.Highly recommended for beginners and experienced stitchers.

This is not a basic embroidery book it is more about an artistic approach to the art of embroidery using design theories and techniques, and if you want to take your embroidery to a new level then this is a great book, but if you are just a beginner it may not be the right book for you at this time. I'm a beginner, and I read the book from cover to cover and was inspired, but it did not help me develop my skills from beginner to intermediate. I'm giving this book a five star because the information was fantastic, and I will definitely use it in the future after I develop my skills in the art.

I love this book. It is not at all your Grandmother's embroidery designs. Unique ideas for stitching to get texture and to represent your designs. Also gives suggestions for creating your designs.

Quite an old book and most things in it have been repeated over and over again in the authors subsequent books.Too expensive for what it is.
