Love this book
Love this book, but many may not, keep in mind it was written in 1860, and a persons writings were indicative of their place in society, so it is a bit flowery and colorful, the writer goes to great pain to describe things. Today, we could communicate his one page in a paragraph. Just the way writing was back then. One would say to themselves today, c'mon get to the point, man. That being said, it is very detailed, as Langstroth is comsidered the Godfather of all things bee related.

Good book, but not much use to a beginner beekeeper.
This book is a great book if you are looking to learn about the history of beekeeping since it was written in the 1800's. I do not recommend the book for thge beginning beekeeper since so much in this book is difficult to understand, but if you are a reasonably experienced beekeeper who is used to the terminology it can be interesting. It is a difficult read, but with due diligence much can be learned from it. I gave this book four stars only because of the difficulty in wading through some mighty esoteric stuff.

Not for newbies
Less educational than I had been lead to believe, not an efficient reference, but entertaining. Not sure why there were images in the back.

Of historical value
This is the BBKA recommended text for the Module 1 examination and is a reprint of the text of Langstroth's 19th century seminal work on bees and the use of hives with moveable frames but sadly without any of the wonderful illustrations found in the original. It has great historical interest but with expressions such as " Timid Apiarians, and all who are liable to suffer severely from the sting of a bee, should by all means furnish themselves with the protection of a bee-dress" its value as a set book for modern beekeeping examinations is limited.

Beware, pictures missing
Don't buy this one - it is missing the pictures and diagrams. Get the one with the yellow cover instead.

Good Historic background to Beekeewpeing.
It is very interesting a gives a good back ground to the development of the moveable frame hive but of course there are more up to dates books on the subject which are now available.

Good historical perspective of bee keeping.
Great essay on care of the honey bee. Not so technical as I would have liked, but full of detail and enlightening none the less. Take into consideration that this book was written in the mid 1800’s but a somewhat religious (as most were) American bee keeper. It is a good collection of experience from some of the leading experts at the time.
