Great music, impressive percussion
Just great Cuban music, mambo's, boleros and big band arrangements. The percussion is really impressive, several great conga solos. In addition, almost every number has exciting trumpet solos. As in AfroCuban jazz, the arrangements are exquisite but in this case the percussion is highlighted. Yo soy el Son Cubano, is definitely very enjoyable. Includes a wonderful solo by Paquito D'Rivera in Chucho. Non-stop big band excitement.

The Heart of Cuban Bop
For decades, Mario Bauza was the heart of Machito's music. This late CD (1992) gives everyone a chance to hear why he was so highly esteemed by such as Dizzy Gillespie. If this CD doesn't move you, perhaps you've missed your funeral.

Outstanding Big Band Afro-Cuban
This is the best of the small group of Mario Bauza CDs. It is amazing that someone like Mario Bauza kept going such a long time. This is quintessential Afro-Cuban big band. It is traditional, yet powerful with really strong players and hot trumpets throughout. You'll love it. Also look into Machito, Chano Pozo.

THE REAL THING!
This is a classic of The Mambo King! It is a must have if you are a real collectionist. The arrangements and the orchrestation is perfect. I love Rumba Abierta and Ganga. It is sad this kind of music is not being play live anymore. Enjoy it, It's worth every penny!

Latin Jazz at its Best
Bauza's Tanga Suite, and other tunes by equally skilled composer/arrangers, are sensationally performed by a Latin jazz big band. The percussionists develop incredible rhythms, the trumpet section is screaming, and the trombone solos had me dancing and laughing. It's been said that Bauza created Latin jazz--in 1943--while blending his native Cuban music with the burgeoning bebop that was transforming jazz at the time. This album, recorded almost 50 years later, proves how enduring and exciting the music is.

Absolutely essential
If you like jazz, big band or latin jazz, or all three, you must have this. The best latin jazz album I've ever heard. It's got groove, it's got that big sound, it's got all kinds of latin rhythm. Many, many things in one album.
