FuelHawk Fuel Gauge - Cessna 172 - 19 Gallon

The fuel in aircraft is listed as "total fuel" and "usable fuel". The "Unusable fuel" is the fuel that remains in the tanks and fuel lines after all usable fuel has been used. This is fuel that is UNAVAILABLE in flight. This means that your engine will cease working if your fuel level falls under that amount. That might ruin your day, your passenger's day, and it might also ruin your aircraft. Depending on the aircraft make and model, this "unusable fuel" can be up to SEVERAL gallons! In the specific case of the older Cessna 172, each wing holds 21 gallons of fuel, but only 18.5 gallons of it is USABLE, and that is what the FuelHawk measures. I run a flight school in Omaha, Nebraska, and all our students are required to use one of these before EACH flight.

It’s a pain to pay so much for plastic, but it’s thick and durable. Had one of these in the early 2000s and accidentally broke it, so this is a replacement. This is great if you need to do partial fuel loads or have multiple pilots flying same plane. Just makes fuel management a bit easier. I used to dip my finger, but my skin can’t handle avgas the way it could 20 years ago.

Works as expected and appears to read correctly (on full tanks) on a Cessna 172N with dual 19 gallon tanks (38 total usable).

A must have with older fuel gauges, always know what you’re starting with.

Reads lower than actual on my 172E, Universal gets 5 stars but is MUCH more effort to calibrate flawlessly.but still this will not leave you high and dry, better to have more than less avgas... unless you are on fire ;]
