Another Great and Enchanting Book
The second book of the Winterhouse stories did not disappoint. I couldn’t put it down many times. The mystery was really good and there were new characters just as hateful and sinister as the last. There are even still some secrets left undone that were eluded too that I am curious about and what story will come from them. I’m a huge fan.

Enjoyable story, distracting writing
My kids and I have enjoyed reading this series aloud together. I like how much vocabulary the author sneaks into the story. However, some writing choices are distracting, pulling you out of being absorbed in the story. For example, he almost exclusively uses "Elizabeth said" and "Freddy said." For an author using such robust vocabulary otherwise, it's very strange that he almost never uses another verb with dialogue. It's very distracting to read "so-and-so said" back to back, over and over on a page. There are also occasional repeated words in a small amount of space, which likewise distracts from being a part of the story. Otherwise a fun concept.

Great for middle readers
We are really enjoying this series as a read a loud for my children 13 & 8. At times it's a bit dark for my 8 yr old but she refuses to miss out because she enjoys the rest so much. Filled with mysteries and puzzles, they love trying to figure them out along with the characters. It's also fun relating this series elements to many others they've read. We're on to the 3rd book now for our summer read.

Fun new adventure in the series
I enjoyed this second offering in the Winterhouse series. It’s definitely a place I would love to visit! A few times the main character Elizabeth behaves in a very disrespectful way...albeit provoked. I just didn’t enjoy the moments of brattiness...because otherwise she is quite an intriguing young heroine! And I also just love Freddy!

Fun series
This is a fun middle grade series. Some parts of the magic parts don't work for me but I like the characters and the setting.

Good series
Local Barnes and Nobles didn't have the 2nd book in the series so I purchased it in Amazon for my daughter. She has loved all the books in the series. Finished them all in less than a month. She is 11.

Great read!
As an adult, I enjoyed this second book as much as the first. The mystery & intrigue of the story propelled me from chapter to chapter! I loved the setting, appreciated the quality of the main characters & their relationships with each other, as well as the fact that Elizabeth, who must on her own make a crucial decision chooses well. She grows in understanding as she learns how to handle life lessons. I'd recommend it to children in 4th - 7th grade, & beyond

A good sequel and we're excited for the next book!
My 12-yr-old son and I read a lot of books together of different genres and the Winterhouse books are good ones that we both enjoy! You root for the main characters and the story pulls you in--it never gets boring. This was a great sequel and we're excited for the 3rd book that comes out in December! Very clever and lots of interesting puzzles, codes and details.
