Would not recommend this book
I was really excited for this book since it was supposed to be authentic Portuguese cooking. I started looking through the book and slowly started getting disappointed. Major disappointment came when I got to the recipe for carne a alentejana... everything sounded good until I saw that she wrote to use par boiled potatoes and finish them in the sauce... THIS IS NOT THE TRADITIONAL WAY.... plus... the picture she uses for the recipe, and the photo on the cover of the book, you can clearly see that it is made with fried potatoes... she is false advertising the recipe. Why use a photo with the potatoes fried, but say the potatoes are parboiled in the recipe. Some person that isn’t familiar with carne a alentejana is going to make this using her recipe, then be disappointed that it didn’t come out the way it is supposed to look. After reading this recipe, it makes me not trust her recipes and I don’t want this book any longer. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU WANT TRADITIONAL PORTUGUESE RECIPES!!

this cookbook is an amazing companion to her first book Portuguese Homestyle Cooking
I have a large number of Portuguese cookbooks (and cookbooks from former Portuguese colonies) and Ana's cookbooks are the cream of the crop!this cookbook is an amazing companion to her first book Portuguese Homestyle Cooking. both books not only give you detailed instructions on how to make some of the most tasty recipes they also give you a glimpse into her life growing up in a Portuguese household and community were family is the most important part of your life. Over the years I have searched for different Portuguese bread recipes to try, some were alright but most lacked the wisdom and experience that Ana has. Her recipes are tried and true and the end results are incredible. Portuguese cooking is as varied as the country itself and Ana has brought so many recipes from different regions of Portugal in to this cookbook that you can cook your way through gastronomical tour of Portugal. The Portuguese have a word 'Saudade" melancholic longing or yearning some of us have this for a dish that our mother or fathers may have made when we were children, but alas they never wrote it down and now they are gone and the the recipe with them. Ana has put so many recipes from my childhood, that the smells and taste take me into my memories as if it were yesterday. I like to bake bread and this cookbook has given me so many different recipes to try and expand my horizons in baking because she has done all the trial an error for me. Cooking is not just about eating it's also about sharing your time, and making memories that is why like Ana's father I try and spend my time cooking and baking with my kids teaching the not only how to cook but the many traditions that go with the Portuguese and their food. I can not recommend this cookbook and her first book enough. Buy both read them from cover to cover, find something you like, and get to cooking making your own memories.

Mostly Portuguese-American Adaptations
Most lovers of Portuguese food in the USA and Canada will recognize most of the recipes. In Portugal, pork is the king of meats, not beef. In fact one would be hard pressed to find more than two offerings of beef on any typical restaurant menu. There seems to be a large number of Azorian influenced recipes most likely because most Portuguese-Americans can trace their ancestry back to those Atlantic Isles. For those who expressed alarm over the frequent use of saffron in the recipes, be comforted that ex-pats here use "assafroa" safflower tendrils or powder in its stead. All in all, it's a nice representation of tasty food which can well up memories for those who neglected to jot down grandma's recipes.

THe real deal
This cook book is outstanding in every way (except for one minor niggle about the photos being so blown up and magnified) -- the recipes are interesting and beautifully explained. The cultural material is fascinating and the instructions are spot on. I love this cook book -- my favorite cook book this year (and I look at cook books obsessively). Having grown up on an island with a lot of Portuguese influences and cooking I am delighted to add this to my cook book collection -- further it is a delightful, charming and engaging read. I haven't cooked any of the recipes yet but they read OK and will be delicious I am sure.

Really good food
Interesting - the recipes in this book are great - the only problem I have is when I am on line at a Portuguese website and they are discussing food, I can never find the recipe they are discussing in this cookbook. So I am confused as to why that is? Other than that whether the recipes in the cookbook are Portuguese or not they are delicious.

Amazing cookbook and fantastic author
I returned from a trip to Portugal on a mission to recreate a bollo canela, a cinnamon cake I was served in the Douro Valley. The recipe the Inn gave me didn't translate well. After finding this book in my local library, I tried Ana's recipe that looked fairly close. Bingo! I even contacted the author and was thrilled that she got in touch with suggestions to tweak her recipe. Portuguese food is wonderful and under rated. I can't wait to try more of her recipes included in this book to recreate my trip! This is my favorite new cookbook! Muito obrigada!!!

Great book! Highly recommend!
So very glad we didn’t listen to the negative reviews about this book! This is a great book with lots of authenticity to it. The recipes are easy to follow and well planned out with a bit of history behind most of the recipes.
