This is the version you want
This is the only version of this book that has DinoDefense in it. DinoDefense does a tremendous job of teaching ECS, pathfinding, agents/goals/behaviors, as well as many other useful techniques. If you only picked one of the games in the book to learn great game techniques using SpriteKit and GameplayKit, this game would be it. It is covered in three chapters. It also has nice artwork, animations, sound effects, and music.Yes, it is an older version of Swift that you'll have to manually update the source code but its really not that hard or timeconsuming to do if you are not a beginner, and you really only have to do it once for the starter file for the tutorial and afterwards just keep working in that file for the three chapters. This book is NOT a book for beginner programmers or new comers to Swift, it is not meant to be.

I bought this book as an PDF on raywenderlich.com and I learned a lot from it!Altough I am interested in game development with SpriteKit since it is out with iOS 7 and read a lot of tutorials. This book really helped me with many things I found no tutorial in the internet for.You start with the fundamental things of game development, things you can use for every game engine and then you learn more specific topics that are SpriteKit related.Soon I will publish my first game on the AppStore, thanks to this book!

Not a bad beginner book
I own several RW books. The other review nit picks on UI guidelines, but this book is largely for a beginner, and the basics of tvOS. It's not a start to finish guide on how to create a polished, pro app and start making money off of it.It's also just about the only book on tvOS right now. So it's early in that it's first, and it doesn't dive in depth with tvOS but instead breaks up the tvOS chapters with general SpriteKit concepts that you need to understand anyway if you want to build for ATV.

Source Code not Updated for Download
I just started using, and am excited to proceed. I cannot find the latest source code for this publication, however.I used the link provided in the text, but on see the 1.2 and NOT the 2.0 SWIFT code. I could not move forward with the very first example, because there is a sprite for ipad missing -- it is required for any project targeted for iOS 9.0 or greater. All I see on the site is more ways to buy "bundles". Now way to really email or ask where the code is.

The first edition of this book was great and was invaluable resource for writing iOS games
The first edition of this book was great and was invaluable resource for writing iOS games. This edition was rushed out. The print is of poor quality and the sections on tvOS do not cover the extremely important topic of handling the menu and home buttons. The authors didn't bother to read Apple's user interface guide and how to handle the menu and home buttons and refer to their behavior as a bug in the operating system. Use this book to write a tvOS app and your app will be rejected by Apple for not properly handling the menu and home buttons.

The Cringe is the Real
While the book is a great introduction to swift and has a lot of useful resources, its downfall comes in its copy and paste code. There's no real challenge, granted, there are challenges at the end of each chapter, but usually it's already explained to you half the time and if you buy the book on his actual website it's more of a matter of checking to see if you're right. I will admit the book was great at some points, but you have to complete chapters prior to get right into the next chapter half the time. Not to mention the cringey 2006 memes are real in this book. IGN 10/10.

Excellent SpriteKit Tutorial
If you want to find out how to write games for Apple iPads/iPhones or indeed tvOS, using SpriteKit, this is an excellent Tutorial resource. It takes you through the development of 4 quite complex games targetted at iOS, then shows how to target them at tvOS. It is bang up to date with IOS 9, Xcode 7 and Swift 2. I found no inconsistencies with the current version of Xcode. It sets a number of challenges for the user, but provides the solutions with the on-line resources for the book. An excellent book.

As an experienced Objective-C developer, I found this a good book. My gripe is the lack of an index. Given most books of this type will not just be read, but referred to time and time again, I find that extraordinary. Yes, it did force me very grudgingly to buy the PDF (still expensive even with the discount because I had bought the paper book). However, in future I'll be looking for alternatives that do have an index.
