Colin Dexter's Inspector Morse Collection - 14 Books

Disappointing
Having recently enjoyed the 'Endeavour' series on TV (I somehow managed to miss 'Inspector Morse'), I thought I'd treat myself to the full set of Morse novels. However, much as I love detective thrillers, I'm really struggling with these (I'm on the fourth book). The style of narrative is – I guess – supposed to reflect the way Morse thinks, which is not very logical and linear. No wonder poor Lewis struggles to keep up. I think the main problem is that the character of Morse himself is actually not very likeable – he spends a lot of time drinking beer in pubs, hankering after women half his age, swearing and is not averse to soft porn, so the novels very often feel seedy. Maybe that's not a turn-off for some people, but it is for me. The stories themselves are often confusing and not actually that intriguing. I doubt I'll finish reading the series (I've only got this far because I keep hoping things will improve).
