Not what I was expecting
Illustrations were fantastic, text seemed unorganized and disjointed. No flow. Disapointing .

Usual (good) thing from Osprey
I play Saga. This book helped me give a good paint job to my Pagan Rus and Rus Princes factions. It was the impetus for me to buy it.Other than that, it's the usual affair from Osprey (I've many other Osprey books) with good detail and footnotes to direct you to further research in the specifics it is covering. This book also has some good info on 10th century Rus fortress cities like Novgorod.

ganz gut
Hier haben wir eines der Osprey-Hefte, bei dem sich meine Begeisterung in Grenzen hält. Es gibt zu viele Ungenauigkeiten, die einfach hätten vermieden werden können. Schade.

Early Russian Warriors
Your typical men-at-arms title, concise and well-researched text supported by numerous illustrations, including Angus McBride's standard quality plates.

Vast area, vast time period, many influences
In this very good introduction, David Nicolle, provides the reader with a quick travel through medieval Russia since the beginnings of Scandinavian adventurers trading with Slavs, until the coming of the Mongols. The author competently analyses influences, political and religious alignment, the military equipment and way of fighting of the medieval Rus. Obviously some detail went to the Druzhina forces of the princes and the emblematic Varjazi and the allied Chernye Klobuki. They are the most well known and easily recognized to the general public, so it makes sense to provide information about those warriors. But the author concentrated on the influences the Rus received (and transmitted), both eastern and western; their inner political system of several princes under a grand prince and eventual problems like successions, inner fighting, the power of boyars and city councils, enemies that can't be beaten (like Mongols). It also provides interesting information of the particular strategic importance of the rivers in Russia and winter as a campaign season. You will find very informative line drawings of weapons, armor and fortifications; great photos of artifacts and a useful chronological table. The magnificent color plates are authored by Angus McBride and include the following illustrations:-Before the Rus, 9th C (including a Magyar cavalryman and a eastern Slav tribal warrior in a trade operation with a Scandinavian merchant-venturer);-The first Rus, 9th - 10th Cs (Sviatoslav of Kiev dressed as a steppe "Khan", warrior of pagan Druhzina, Pecheneg chieftain);-Kievan warriors in river operation (commander of a princely army, warrior of a senior Druzhina and a urban militiaman);-Eastern Russia 11th-12th Cs (Mordovian warrior fighting Boyar nobleman; Novgorod militiaman);-Souther Russia, 12th C. (Grand Prince of Kiev wearing imposing court dress, palace guardsman, noblewoman and child);-Northern and Eastern Russia, 12th Cs.(Monk giving message to Posadnik governor; garrison soldier);-Chernye Klobuki 12th-13th Cs (a Russian nobel a Chernye-Klobuki keader and a Chernye-Kobukli Standard Bearer charging):-Facing the Mongols, early 13th C. (Galich Boyar, Volhynian militia crossbowman and Lithuanian warrior defending a fortification). As an introduction to the theme this is a superb work. Obviously it as many simplifications and generalizations, but provide a fine stepping stone for further study.

First Book in the Series of Three Books on Medieval Russian Armed Forces Written by David Nicole is Reviewed
This is the first of a series of three books written by David Nicolle which deal with the military forces of Medieval Russia. This book covers the period of time from 750 C.E. [Common Era] through the time of Alexander Nevsky, the Prince of Novgorod, (1221 C.E. through 1263 C.E.). The next book in this series written by David Nicolle is entitled "Armies of Medieval Russia 1250--1500." This second book in the series picks up from where the first book left off and extends through the end of the reign of Ivan III (The Great) (1440 C.E. through 1505 C.E.). A third book in this series also written by David Nicole is entitled "The Armies of Ivan Terrible: Russian Troops 1505 through 1700 C.E." This is the period of time in Russian History from the reign of Ivan IV (The Terrible) (1530 C.E. through 1584 C.E.) up through the time of Peter the Great (1683 C.E. through 1721 C.E.).I used this book ("Armies of Medieval Russia" by David Nicole) as a reference book as I read "Medieval Russia: 980-1584" by Janet Martin which is text book published by Cambridge University Press. The text in the Martin book was rich and detailed. However, the text of the Martin book sometimes assumed the reader was familiar with a great deal of the history of the Russia of the Middle Ages and therefore did not explain some of the concepts in the text. The brief outline form of the text of the Nicolle book, however, did explain these concepts in simple and forthright manner. Thus, my reading of the Martin textbook a much more enjoyable experience.

Eccellente
