Tiny But Growing Fast!
My Silver Maple tree was very tiny when I bought it. It didn't seem possible that it could make it, but a year later I looked and had to take another look to believe it. It's coming on strong. It only now appears to be about as big as the one in the picture. I'm hoping the beaver doesn't notice it. I understand it's one of their favorites. I recently bought some tree guards, so if I can figure out a way to put one on it without hurting it---or getting stung by the yellow jackets in the tree next to it, I think I'll try to protect it from the beaver. He swam off with several bald cypress bare root trees. I'm not happy with him.

The Magnificent Silver Maple Tree
Starting with a sapling, this silver maple will grow to about 25 feet in 10 years. It is a deciduous tree, and will reach a height of 50-80 ft. It commonly branches about 5-6 feet up on the trunk and will spread up to 35-50 feet! So in planting this tree, think - "lots of space!" The wide breadth of this tree makes it more likely to suffer broken branches in wind and snow storms. The leaves are a light green color and will turn a pretty yellow in the fall. It produces scores and scores of "helicopter" seeds in June, so some consider it a "messy" tree. A silver maple makes a wonderful shade tree. It requires full sun and lots of water. After planting, drive a stake in the ground to remind you that it is there - this is so someone does not accidentally run it over with the lawn mower (which I did once).kone
