ABOUT THE DVD
This story is set in an alternate modern-times in Japan. Shiori is a decendent of Ciel Phantomhive who disguises herself as a boy in order to inherit and to carry on the family "business" on behalf of the English Queen and her family's Funtum Company. Sorry for that run-on sentence. Okay, the story is like this: The same horror that targeted Ciel back in the late 1880s desends upon Shiori, along with the same demonic savior, Sebastian. The current case involves a dangerous biological weapon, a terrible betrayal, and connections to the group/conspiracy/enemies that stole away Shiori's happiness. It is a good movie but not an outstanding one. I blame the casting. They SHOULD have gotten someone else to play Sebastian and also stayed true the REAL butlers hair style as depicted in the mangas, animes, and the live-action musical plays. In any case, If your a fan of the manga/anime then you'll want to get this. The only reason a true fan would hesitate to by this would be because of either lack of money or your not sure if your BLUERAY/DVD player can play this DVD. If its the former, just save up and get it later. You're already planning to get this, right. If its the latter then I can tell you that THIS dvd is region fine for America or to play on a player of the type sold in America.

I was a disappointed when I saw that it wasn't the Ciel from ...
The Black Butler anime series is one of my favorites. When I saw that there was a live action for it I was ecstatic! I was a disappointed when I saw that it wasn't the Ciel from the anime in the movie but the storyline, the action, the new main character, and Sebastian made up for it. Sebastian is portrayed beautifully in the movie. If you love the anime you will enjoy the movie.

Black Butler, A Good Movie in Need of Corrections
I waited a long time to see this movie. Black Butler, or Kuroshitsuji is based on the manga of the same name by Artist/writer Yana Toboso and published in GF Fantasy. This is my favorite Manga. The original manga is set in an alternate universe version of Victorian England, and while this movie is set in the future (2020) the plot is basically the same. We follow the story of Shiory Genpo, the sole surviving descendent of the Phantomhive (the character's original name) family. The original character Ciel Phantomhive sells his soul in exchange for revenge against the people who humiliated him and murdered his parents. He becomes the ruthless force in the London Underground, Queen Victoria's watchdog, controlling the criminal underground by force, while running a legitimate business empire. In this movie, the demonic contract has been passed down for generations, each succeeding family head contracting the services of the demon butler Sebastian Michaelis. But there's a catch: the leadership of the family can only be inherited by a male, and the sole surviving heir...is a girl. The story follows the original Black Butler Manga, barring the absence of a few characters: Finnian, the Gardener, Bardo, the Chef, and Grell. If you've seen the original Black Butler, either as a manga or anime, and liked it, you shouldn't find this story too different. I wanted to like this movie, but there were some problems, and not with the film itself. The movie is marred by awkward translation work which hampers some of the philosophical points the author tries to make in regards to Sebastian and Shiory's relationship. Also, there is the annoying tendency for the translator to call Sebastian "Sebas-chan" which is a 'little girl" style diminutive used by one particular character in the manga who is 'not' part of the story 'here'. (Kind of like calling a girl named Christine "Chrissy", or Michelle "Missy") On a closing note, I'd like to correct the people who did the Amazon.com synopsis. "Black Butler" is not related to the "Captain Harlock" story in any way, shape or form. "Captain Harlock" is the story of a space-going pirate.Black Butler is an entertaining film, but if Warner Bros. is going to distribute Japanese movies, they should at least try for accurate translations. This is like reading a book with out of focus printing.

I don't regret buying but as a critic I must be harsh
the was good ,as a critic the setting seems off perhaps it would have been better if it was so random like instead the future it was the far past, in the manga it mentioned that internet's relation to the Phantomhive was deep and mysterious that it even included Ciel's grandmother for undertaker had her hair on the chain Ciel took from him , now that would make for a great movie ,that would also give a chance to lengthen the cast and be for creative when it comes to personality of the characters , because the cast choosen were all completely off on capturing the persona, because of this the movie it self with the random setting/ fashion/law and new characters loses collector's value because it's uncomfortable/incompatible to the anime or manga or it's merch

Awesome movie - Poor translations
I love this movie and I've already watched it twice. It got to me a lot quicker than I thought which was great but the subtitles are pretty bad. If I didn't already understand the plot and what Black Butler was about, I would have been sooo confused.Another thing to keep in mind, this is a Japanese movie so keep in mind, like their books, the front of the case is actually the back. So the label isn't backwards, it's just the way their books and dvds are..

Like others, my only real complaint is the subtitles
While an alternate version of the story, the movie did a decent job of keeping key elements from the manga. Like others, my only real complaint is the subtitles. Although the description says it is the Japanese movie w. English subtitles, the movie was distributed from Malaysia and the subtitles have been translated from Japanese to Malay or Chinese then to English. Unless you want to constantly read then re-read the subtitles because they did not make sense, fork over the extra money for the Japanese version or wait until the Hong Kong version is released.

... at first about whether or not it would be good (I'd heard a lot of bad reviews)
I was worried at first about whether or not it would be good (I'd heard a lot of bad reviews), but I really enjoyed it and was able to see the parts from the manga and anime that were used in the movie plot. Overall, my only complaint was the lack of Shinigami characters xD

One Hell Of A Butler ... same can be said for the film too.
I really enjoyed this, I'm a fan of the Manga and the Anima and I bought this because of them. It's very different from both so be aware of that before you click buy. I liked the film because it kept aspects of the manga but used the charter's differently. I personally enjoyed it and I loved watching Hiro Mizushima as Sebastian Michael's, the demon black butler, I thought he nailed the part. If your a fan of Hiro then you know it's not his first time playing a butler (Mei's Butler, the Manga adopted to live TV drama was for me awfully bad, but so bad it was great and Hiro played the Butler for that one and did a bang up job of it in my opinion)I think for allot of BB fan's they will throw a tantrum and curse this film out. But I enjoyed the different take of the idea it's self and for me it keep the look and feel of a Manga that is now pretty large. It's very difficult to encompass that kind of volume into a 2 hour film, it can't really be done with allot of great success I feel. I think this was properly the general thoughts of the script writer's too. I'd love it if they made a second one but I don't hold out much hope. All in all a good film to watch, if only for Sebastian's sarcasm and wit.

Enjoyable romp into the world of Demons
This is an enjoyable film based on the popular anime. Others complain about the film not being like the anime. I understand their feelings but I have learned to let each media do what they think will make an enjoyable project. Example Ian Flemings Bond and the Bond movies. This movie stands on it's own. I like the characters and the story is good if not great. Anyone who likes off beat films may want to take in Black Butler.

Ingenious Japanese film
I urge everyone thinking of buying this DVD BUY THIS FILM. As with a vast majority of Japanese films lately this is very very good and has a brilliant storyline that is complex and the film has some amazing twists that you just will not see coming. the story revolves around a very wealthy head of a business empire who hides her true identity behind a male persona. the reason for the masquerade is the head of the empire has to be male. Her butler is really a demon who wants her soul when she finally gets revenge for her parents death 10 years ago. kiyoharu is ordered by the Queen whom her family serve to look into a strange mystery involving bodies being mummified and a strange tarot card left at the scene of the crime. iwill leave it there for now as i don't want to give too much away and spoil it for those whom wish to purchase this film but i urge you, You MUST watch this film as I guarantee you will be gripped from start to finish and the ingenious plot twists along the way will keep you guessing until the end. i wish i could give this brilliant film 7 stars as it is worth it

I want a butler and it has to be Sebastian
If you have watched the Black Butler anime then you will want to watch the live action drama. The thing about living in the UK is it's hard to watch Asian dramas online, let alone buy them and we have to wait ages for them to be subbed and sometimes they don't get subbed and you can't watch them... ever (very sad face) so when something like this comes along at a reasonable price then it's a no brainer- buy it. I wondered how they were going to do a live adaptation and it is done well. If you are a die hard fan of the anime then you will pick up on and already know about the changes and the storyline. I enjoyed this, I wasn't expecting the anime and what I got was a good movie, besides the actor that plays Sebastian is a very beautiful man!

Modern AU maintaining Victorian dress and Faustian contracts.
I've been aware of this film's existence since it's premiere back in 2014 and originally watched a poorly subbed version of it and enjoyed it immensely then. Two years down the line and I still enjoy and appreciate the film. While I understand many will feel a lot of disdain towards this film as it does not present the original duo of Sebastian Michaelis and Ciel Phantomhive, instead introducing Shiori Genpo as the eye-patched Earl in disguise as a boy to maintain her title, and that the film tampers with the Victorian setting as well as other Kuroshitsuji characters such as Undertaker & Madam Red I suggest if you're considering watching this film you ignore such criticisms. If you are truly seeking a live-action dedicated adaptation of a Kuroshitsuji arc consult the musicals. This film is driven by an ensemble of good and moderate actors, at it's heart the actors behind Sebastian and Shiori are excellent and have great chemistry and considering this film primarily is focused on their relationship and contract it is a necessity that they actors are apt. Also I would like to draw special attention to Rin, the Genpo housemaid who is able to juggle being a clumsy maid to a badass maid with guns while conveying the emotional depth of Rin's loyalty to the Genpo house. To be honest with an exception of Hanae Wakatsuki (the Madam Red character) almost everyone is very much in-tune and written in accordance to canon characterization from the manga which greatly counters the fanboy/girl criticism I outlined earlier. As far as weak points are concerned the dialogue can be terribly exposition heavy and feel thrown in there just for the sake of later reference regardless of how relevant it is to the scene it's presented in, the world building is weak - while somewhat presenting futuristic elements and a new political system with two major powers in the West and East both seem to be under the Western Queen's eye but there is little elaboration as to how this system works or why the setting is important to the story and certain scenes appear constructed to allow for deus ex machinas. However I do not feel as though these aspects steal from the film's entertainment, the film choose to instead focus on it's characters and plot which while is not at perfect solution I suppose it just depends on how nit-picky you as a viewer are. The soundtrack is adequate for the most part with one notable track -Akihisa Matsuura's 'The Steps of World's End is particularly moving and perfectly placed during one of the last epic scenes.Overall this film is by no means perfect, it may not be enjoyable to an audience beyond those who are already familiar with the manga/anime that this is based on but if you are a fan of the original works by Yana Toboso then this film is worth the watch if only as an extension of AU material featuring characters that you do know and love. As for those new to the Kuroshitsuji universe hopefully this might be your gateway into the Kuroshitsuji universe regardless of whether you like it or not.
