I was looking for information on Prince George’s County, it’s residents, slave trade and establishment of churches. It provided great info and resources

Extraordinarily well written and meticulously researched
This is an eye-opener of a book. The courtroom battles are riveting; the articulation of legal concepts easily understood by the lay reader; and the extent of legal research is exceptional. Reading this book will forever change your outlook about the various counties in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and the lives forever altered by the court system and the precedents set by John Marshall and other Supreme Court Justices. It is a "must-read" for anyone interested in the dark history of America's slave-trading past, and the indictment of the Jesuit's past involvement in the enslavement of African Americans.

A great and necessary book
I never appreciated before the centrality of slavery in the history of Maryland, the duplicity of the Jesuits and the animus of Francis Scott Key. This book brings to life the courtroom battles to challenge slavery through freedom suits and the ironic and tragic consequences for the plaintiffs even when juries upheld their claims. This chapter in American history needs to be told more broadly and to wider audiences.

Fascinating reading.
Thomas recounts the remarkable struggle of how slaves challenged the legitimacy of slavery through courtroom battles. It's an extraordinary book that completely changed how I understood the place of slavery in Antebellum society. Essential for ongoing debates about reparations and the legacy of slavery today.
