PPO PPE Hard Plastic Spanner for PV Solar Connector (2pcs spanners)

I was on the search for MC4 connector for 8AWG cabling. I ran a stretch of 150Ft of cable from my solar array to my house, and needed cable to handle up to 30A amps. 8 AWG (55A) was the reasonable choice to cover my needs over a long distance with low loss. Now to find MC4 connectors for that gauge was not as simple as I thought. There are not many offerings out there. I found these and ordered them immediately.I was very pleased when they arrived. The metal inner connectors are heavy gauge, and require a rhombus crimper which I have for cable ferrules. They crimp great and have a terrific hold. The contact is superb and I now have heavy gauge MC4 connectors that I am more than sure can handle 30A of current.These are top quality, weather resistant and weatherproof connectors that will last for many years. If you are in the need for 8AWG MC4 connectors, these are the ones to get. 5 stars all day long.

I got these because I have 8 gauge wire, and this is all I could find. I was pleasantly surprised with the build quality. They seem pretty solidly made. The one thing is, the build quality makes them hard to crimp. Make sure you have a good quality crimper.

The locking mechanism makes it a bit hard to disconnect. However, this is because of the NEC requirement when used for connecting solar panels. NEC requires the use of locking connectors. However, I use it for regular connections because of its waterproofing properties. So I just scored the plastic locking tabs on both sides and snapped off the piece with a needle nose. That's it! It works like a charm. The reason I slashed stars is because they did not include a plastic wrench. You cannot buy the wrench for 8 AWG anywhere. However I used the plastic jaw pliers from Harbor Fright :) for tightening.

I generally don't trust MC-4 connectors. I don't think the design is very good, and most of the MC-4 connectors out there have overly flimsy parts (that handle hundreds of volts and often many tens of amps). These connectors looked substantial, and they were. Most importantly to me, the barrels fit very snugly and had plenty of metal in them. It's a quality product.

This is the perfect tool for DYI solar installs. It allows you to unlock both types of PV wire connectors.
