Two Times the Fun!
What a cute story with a real math message! It's nice to see a high quality picture book that contains math. As an educator and a parent, I found this book wonderful in many different ways.As a teacher, it's the perfect book to reinforce counting by twos. (It's the only one I know of!) It's always helpful when you can integrate subject areas, especially reading and math. As a read aloud, the children love to help you "read" as they count by two's. The structure of the book has great story elements that naturally lend itself to reading strategies, such as predictions, beginning-middle-ending, and character traits. As a parent, my children enjoyed the animal characters and colorful illustrations. They were fully engaged, wanting to know more. They too, enjoyed counting by twos as we read the book together many times. The suggested activities on the last page enabled me to reinforce counting by twos with additional fun, "hands-on" activities.Moove Over is a great book where children enjoy a humorous story and don't even realize they're learning math at the same time!

a cow on a bus
This is a cute, funny book about animals riding a bus. Cows are indeed farm animals and can be rude, but this is a silly story and does not reinforce rude behavior.

Reinforces bad manners
This book had a really bad message. The author's bio in the back states that when she was little, her mom would pile her daughters into the back seat of the car, ask them if they had enough room, and tell them to move over, scooching them with her butt. That's a cute story. What ISN'T cute, is this version of that story. The trolley driver counts the animal passengers as they load onto the trolley by twos. A group of school kids (who are literally goats, that's actually very cute) tries to get on, and a cow pushes them out of the way so she can get on. !! Then the driver loses count, thinking he has only the maximum of 20 passengers he is allowed to transport on his trolley. The cow proceeds to ask everybody on the trolley if they have enough space, and if they do, to move over. She sits, her packages/bags sit, she literally spreads out her picnic, an umbrella, a blanket, a chaise longue.... Some may find this funny, because the rest of passengers wind up on the roof. Ok, that is mildly humorous, and my five-year-old laughed. But she doesn't 'receive her comeuppance' as stated in the 'School Library Journal' review. The only reason she is put off the trolley is because there are 21 instead of 20 animal passengers on the trolley. At no point does anyone stop to say, 'gosh, you're being really rude by pushing everybody out of the way.' Then she immediately flags down a bus to take her the rest of the way, telling the trolley driver *he* is very rude! You could argue I'm taking this too seriously, that it's a book about counting by twos. Maybe so. But I work very had to teach my children manners, and it's not 'funny' when a book about counting twos shows rude behavior. What's the sequel, pushing the other passengers off the bus?
