Pure Action-Adventure Sci-fi!
If you like âAlienâ (any of them), âSphereâ (the underrated classic with Sharon Stone), "Godzilla", or âCloverfieldâ, you will absolutely love this movie. And you know why I give it 5 stars (because I can feel the film purists on my trail) â because this movie GOES THERE. I donât know why science fiction films have been pushed to the side in the past decade or more (âLifeâ is another one, with Ryan Reynolds, that disappeared from theaters but was excellent) â probably wrong focus groups â but this is one that actually deserved attention.Right from the get-go, the film takes off with something causing an underwater oil rig to fall apart. We donât have time to get to know the characters and their each little nuances â no one has that kind of time â and the film knows this and so it justâŠwellâŠstarts.Characters get their individuality later â and thatâs completely fine. And letâs be honest â you might be hesitant because, well, BellaâŠor Kristen Stewart (however you feel about either one, fictional and real). But, I wouldnât let that deter you. Where there was Stewart constantly out of breath and just a little aloof in other movies, it works here as sheâs an engineer who basically is the new Ripley for 2020âs âAlienâ cousin (right down to an ending of running in underwear) trying to make sure everyone gets to escape pods while battling and escaping underwater sea creatures that threaten to destroy them as it did the oil rig.Thatâs the other part of âUnderwaterâ getting 5 stars, which is that it shows you the monster. Sure, there are jump scares and the scary music, and I would lower the volume or watch with the sound off unless youâre into that sort of thing, but this movie looks expensive. Itâs not like those direct-to-video things you see on the Syfy channel (no offense, Syfy, you know weâre cool) - this one actually took time to make the creatures, show them to you, and then scare you with them (itâs like a cooler âAnnihilationâ).This film is also very claustrophobic â so beware. Not only are they fighting for their lives underwater, theyâre also crawling through tight spaces and then facing challenge after challenge in gear that almost looks like space suits. And, really, thatâs what âUnderwaterâ is. Itâs a space movie... in water. But, like I say, it jumps right in and Iâm grateful. Movies today, itâs like âLet me show you 15 minutes of settingâ then âLet me show you 20 minutes of people staring at nothing or each otherâ to âOh, I forgot, we have a plot, hereâs the last hourâ.âUnderwaterâ starts off with a bang, literally, and pretty much doesnât let up. And for that, Iâm thankful.Thank you for not wasting my time as a viewer. Thank you for showing the monsters in detail ("Godzilla: King of the Monsters" fans will feel the love in this movie). Thank you for spending money on this film. Thanks for a film to watch to pass a lazy Saturday.5 stars.

a better movie than it should've been
It delivers the claustrophobia and the urgency extremely well. Excellent cast, and good writing. It stuck the ending, though. The last few minutes took a star off of my rating for it. -- It's still good, though, and it's not only worth renting. It's worth purchasing and adding to your physical media collection. 4/5. Well recommended.

A surprisingly decent horror flick
Underwater is nothing special. If you've seen Alien, The Thing, or literally any other horror film, then you'll find nothing new here. But that said, it's a decent horror film that is entertaining, well-paced, and has interesting-enough characters to keep things from becoming boring. Even the special and physical effects are well done, including the CGI (although that's because a lot of the film is in the dark). It also does a great job making you feel isolated with the characters, whether crawling in small places or being out in the abyss of the trench. The one massive positive I can give this film is that it introduces a rather well-known 'character' to live-action for the very first time. Well, maybe live-action is a bit much as this character is done in CGI, but it still counts. I won't spoil it here, just go watch it to find out for yourself.I also want to give credit to Kristen Stewart for her performance in this film. Yeah, I don't like the Twilight films or the impact they've had on culture, but Stewart proved that she does have acting ability in this film and got me to like her character. I hope it leads to more roles for her in the future. There are problems with the film, but I can't think of any worth addressing here. I recommend this film if you are looking for something to watch, especially for Halloween."7/10" and a "Recommendation"

Re-inventing Alien- A New Classic
I am not going to explain the movie. Or the plot. Anything, will spoil it. Even the synopsis. SO, What I will tell you is a few things, that may make you consider giving this gem a chance.I dare even mention that this is a monster movie. It is! AND a good one at that. Think The Abyss, Sphere, Alien had somehow blended together in a perfect way. It feels like those movies, but the 'spook factor' is cranked to 11. Think of, that scene in the original Alien, crawling through the air ducts with a unknown creature, kind of spooky. That feeling sustains for just about half the film. So buckle up! There is also a surprising amount of humor in it as well. Maybe even to much. It is like they understood the intensity of each scene. It seems they thought maybe, they needed to release tension with jokes. It can be charming or have nostalgic references to 80's sci fi films. I prefer to wade in the thickness of the atmosphere, but hey! It isn't to overbearing when you reach the meat and beans of the movie. I am definitely adding this to my list of top 10 Sci Fi films. Right there next to Alien and Prometheus(Ya, I said it! Prometheus is the best sci fi movie of all time. It is hard to understand, unless you spend time learning about the movie.) I Digress. When it comes down to what you are going to pick for a truly substantial creature feature. LOOK NO FURTHER! There is something special about this one. Especially one scene in particular.... When you see it, you will know. It is a true flavor of helplessness few films in the genre achieve. Similar to the drowning scene in The Abyss, letting go in a moment you can't control. I got to wrap this up, this is turning into way more than a few things.
