Over 150 mostly color photos in a 261 painting exhibition catalogue from 1880s
This 261 page exhibition catalogue covers the art of 10 of America’s strongest landscape painters from the mid 19th century: Thomas Moran, Albert Bierstadt, Frederic Edwin Church, Sanford Robinson Gifford, Jasper Francis Cropsey, Martin Johnson Heade, Fritz Hugh Lane, Thomas Cole, Asher Durand. Modest Biographical information is included on each. Over all an excellent summary of landscapes from this period. The landscapes of George Inness, and Chauncey Foster Ryder would have strengthen this exhibition and catalogue greatly.

American Sublime - Landscape Painting in the U.S 1820-1880
A beautiful catalogue of mostly the Hudson River School painters who captured the natural beauty of the early U.S.

Stunningly Gorgeous Book
Perfect pristine condition. Tons of excellent color reproductions. Features the Hudson River School, but also includes later artists such as Kensett and others who were labeled "Luminists". If you love this period and are looking for an all-inclusive book, this is it !!

Great Hudson River School Survey!!
I was looking for a detailed overview of the artists of the Hudson River School. This was just what I wanted. It starts in New York and goes up the river in location andforward in history. Eventually going beyond the Hudson to the West and South America.A lot of the understanding of art comes from the history context. This book had an excellentblend of both. Very helpful to understand the motivations and meanings. It put this genrein context with the other movements in the 19th century. It also lead me into purchasingdeeper monographs on the artists that I liked.

Good book on the artist of that time.
Nice book. Bought it because of the cover, but the inside info and pictures and good. Pictures are a bit smaller than I thought, but still good. A friend who collects Thomas Moran and other paintings of that era enjoyed the book also.

American Sublime wonderful
I ordered this book after being introduced to it in my painting class as we are studying landscape painting from that era. I was amazed at the beauty and information the book held when it was shown to us in class and knew I had to have it.This is a must have for anyone studying landscape painting or who is interested in the beauty of America as seen through the eyes of painting masters from that time.

Beautiful book.
This is a beautiful book. The paintings are well-reproduced and the narrative is useful and interesting. The exhibit that it documented was well-curated.
