Colloquial Greek (Colloquial Series)

Easy to use self learning text. The ability to download the sound files is a huge bonus. Recommended.

Although I agree that if I were starting from scratch this book would go right over my head, having got to grips with elementary Greek, I've found it very useful for 'filling the gaps'.It provides the sort of vocabulary that you're likely to encounter in real life, such as idiomatic phrases and informal, conversational use of language, rather than then the standardised, textbook stuff. Although some of the vocab is at a level currently too high for me, I imagine I'll be able to keep dipping into the book for quite some time to come.. which will be very welcome, given the complete dearth of materials for learning Greek beyond elementary level.The layout could be clearer (particularly in the answers to exercises, where it's hard to spot the chapter headings), but it contains explanations of grammar that I've found hard to track down (or understand!) in other books.All in all I've found it a worthwhile addition to my library.

I recommend Colloquial Greek to language scholars. Good explanation of phonics, and generous cultural notes. Most of these "Colloquial" books are well worth studying.
