I like these mats, but I don't love them
These grill mats are good. They hold smaller items, like vegetables and seafood, so they are easy to grill; they are non-stick and clean effortlessly, either by hand or in the dishwasher; foods seem "juicier" cooked on the mats; they don't stick to the grill, even if there is a sauce (chicken), so clean-up is minimal. But there are no grill marks (despite claims to the contrary) and things like burgers and steak seem to stew in their own juices and not be as tasty. This seems to be a small company (they sent 3 emails asking how I liked it) and I would love to give 5 stars, but they aren't quite up to the billing - good, even very good, but not great for everything. When they are good, they are very, very good, but when they are not, they are just OK. That said, it is a 3 pack for not much more than a one-pack of a competitor at Wal-mart (I have a beach house, too, so one went to the grill there, and if your grill is large, you may need all 3) and I like their "we try harder" attitude. Buy the mats if you cook seafood, chicken, veg, etc., just don't use for most beef or pork. (I bought another set for my SIL, so I obviously think they are worth the price.)

These mats make grilling easier
I bought these mats after being introduced to the concept by a friend in Australia. I use a Weber gas grill that can be pretty intense. We like our lamb, pork and beef no more than medium rare and these mats make it easier to achieve, compared to cooking directly on the grill. Timing, of course, is critical.I tried them with a variety of fish, chicken, sausages, chops and burgers. The results were uniformly better than cooking directly on the metal grill, but still managed to get the desirable sear marks even without doing an initial exposure directly on the hot metal. Our friend in Oz likes to do a quick searing on the metal grill at the very end, at least for her chicken, but I don't find that is needed to achieve a really good product.A significant difference with the mats is a reduction in grease fed flare-ups. Grease (a significant factor with lamb) tends to collect on the mat, so at the end I leave the mat on the grill and deal with the grease after it cools. These mats are holding up well. Cleaning is easy, especially if they are allowed to soak briefly in warm soapy water. I use a sponge with a scrubby side that takes off all the little crunky bits with ease.

A plastic mat. Reluctant to use petroleum product in association with the food I eat. Just too many stories about "benign" plastics being not so really benight after all said and done. Not a fault of product or manufacture. They gave adequate warning; I just didn't read them in my hurry to buy. Seems to be well made and will probably do what is intended. There is a risk that I have chosen not to take. I will buy a steel mesh matUPDATED 07/06/15:My concern with PFOA. Mike assures me there is no PFOA. The potential problem with nonstick cookware comes from another chemical used in making Teflon. This chemical, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), has been linked to cancer in laboratory animals, and possibly linked to elevated cholesterol, thyroid disease, and reduced fertility in people. Without PFOA, my concerns are eliminated. Mike has offered me a complete refund. That is not necessary. I will use the grill mat. My assessment is changed from 1-star to 5-star. Mat works well when cooking over a very hot fire.

I love the non-stick surface
I have used these mats several times for a variety of different foods--chicken, fish, potatoes, veggies, etc. I love the non-stick surface! The grill marks still show on the food, and the barbecued flavor is all there. Our new grill has stayed relatively clean, and that is definitely a plus. The only drawback, I think, is that mats themselves are kind of a pain to clean. The non-stick surface means that all the gunk doesn't need to be scrubbed off, but the floppy mats are a little challenging to get thoroughly clean in a sink of soapy water. I have only used two of the three mats, and those two mats have a kind of a film on them that I can't seem to completely remove. Overall, this is a good product, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to grill more than steaks and burgers.

The ONLY way to grill tender fish filets!
Grilling fish over real charcoal has always been a problem, especially flaky fish like Talapia. I'm a charcoal grill fanatic with steak and chicken, but generally avoid most fish as too delicate to grill. My family really wanted to try a special recipe that required basting the tender filets in a seasoned butter sauce. Without the Kitchen Joy BBQ Grill Mat, this would have resulted in major flame-ups from the sauce hitting the hot coals and the filets breaking apart as they were turned over. But with the Grill Mat, the filets held together and the sauce stayed with them on the mat. The result was the most tender, flaky and delicious grilled Talapia any of us had ever tasted. They browned like they had been sauteed in a pan, but retained the most wonderful smokey aroma and taste! I simply could not have achieved the results without the Grill Mats! Easy to clean, too, and seemed unaffected by the hot wood coals. Next, we'll try grilling kabobs on the mats; another 'hard to grill' item that I used to avoid!

Know your grill and keep the temperature low
My husband ordered the mats and we used then this past week. He has not grilled in a long time because of a back problem. We are having a BBQ at our house for out of town relatives this weekend and he wanted to buy the grill mats. He read a review and thought they would keep the food from falling through the grates. Unfortunately we also tried to cook vegetables on the mats and he had the grill way too hot so they charred. I asked him if he had read the instructions but he said they were not very useful. It probably helps to know your grill. Our steaks were delicious but he had turned the grill to a lower temperature at that point. I will be asking my son who grills frequently to cook our meat this weekend.
