Not so bad after all
This is the second Witch P.I. mystery that I have read. When I was about halfway through the book, I made a comment in a Facebook mystery lovers group that I wasn't sure that I was enjoying the book as much as the first one and that maybe I should stick with GAD (Golden Age Detectives - ones written in the so called "Golden Age" of mystery writers, mostly the 1920s and 1930s). However, when I got about 75% into the book, I realized that the problem was that I had categorized it wrong. I had been reading it like it was a mystery with some fantasy involved; it really should be categorized as "the misadventures of a young witch who solves mysteries." Once I realized that, I began enjoying the story much more. To give the story credit, there WERE mysteries that our intrepid young witch solved, three in fact. They weren't overly difficult to solve, but that's not point of the book (I now realize).Where at one point I decided to give up the series after trudging through the end of this book, I now have already purchased the next in the series and look forward to reading it sometime in the near future.

Lots of Fun
I'm new to this series and am really enjoying these books. I'm absolutely into Jill and her witchy family. Jill was adopted and only recently leaned of her witch heritage. Her mother passed on but is still around as a ghostly guardian angel. Her aunt is kind and helpful, her cousins are immature and petty. They define sibling rivalry. But they're never mean or petty to Jill. Her grandmother is ancient, scary and has made it her mission to teach Jill magic. She's tough and it's her way or the highway. She never praises Jill but is secretly proud of how quickly Jill is learning her spellsWhat I'm not into is Jill's human family. Her sister Kathy is the B word that rhymes with witch. Perfect irony. Kathy is awful and constantly meddling in Jill's life. She doesn't interfere to be helpful or supportive, she just always has to be in control and has no problem using emotional blackmail to get her way. I'm waiting and hoping Jill will use her new skills to zap Kathy into another dimension. Ok maybe that's overkill but something needs to done...The story is a fun and imaginative forget-your-troubles for awhile read.

Good cast of characters, Good pace
Jill has the ability to take information acquired in one context and use it in a new context. I count that as an indicator of higher IQ. Pulling together information from various sources makes for good mystery story.

3 1/2 Stars
Okay, I read the first book of this series and really liked it. It was a fun read, especially the dialog with Jill. This one, Book 2, still had the great dialog which made me laugh, and still had the cute interactions between Jill and the hunky cop, but it wasn't as good as Book 1. I think I'd have to agree with another reviewer, Jill is funniest when she's in the real, non-magical world. I'm getting pretty tired of Candlefield and all the various 'sups'. I would like less emphasis on sups and more on how Jill deals with the real world.I mostly enjoy the sibling interactions between Jill and her sister, Karen, but I think it's stupid that Kathy blamed Jill about the Beany Babies when Kathy was the one snooping through someone else's house and taking things that didn't belong to her. That was very irritating! At times I was so fed up with the story that I vowed to never read another one, but then I'd run into more of that delightful and funny dialog and then I think, well maybe I'll get just one more before I quit. That's how much I enjoy Jill's snarky comments, especially her inner ones. So maybe I will get the next book, but if it still focuses on Candlefield and vampires and werewolves and the squabbling twins then I'll have to give up. Wish me luck.

GREAT adventure!
The story just keeps getting better and better – life is more than complicated with Jill especially since she now has two families and can’t tell her Human family about her Witch Family who live in a special city just for all the super subs – warlocks, vampires, angels, witches etc. or she’ll be in serious trouble – besides being a private eye working with a super cranky detective who does NOT want any of her help – she’s learning her first book of spells and having fun doing it until her Witch Grandma takes her under her wing and becomes her teacher ----her witch mother, now dead, and appears as a ghost to Jill is always popping in and out to make the story even more fun --- her receptionists is still fighting with her one eyed cat – and her human sister keeps setting her up with blind dates and taking her to all sorts of places she would rather not go and getting suspicious of her because of the stunts she sees her sister do………..comical, romantic and just a truly fun read!

American Horror Story Freak Show meets Sabrina
I wad hopeful starting this series. With so many books it had to be good right? The first one was not great but I kept going. When Kathy broke into her sister's house, let her kid wipe snot all over Jill's most precious possession and then blamed Jill and ended up taking the beanie babes? I was like, WTF angry. I can't even imagine how the author comes up with such abusive, narcissistic characters. Such entitled brats for children? And then to normalize it???? I can picture Kathy and her family as a character in an American Horror Story plot, not in a lighthearted book like this. The twins fighting has already gotten repetitive. How does Jill have money to do things? It doesn't seem that she actually works or gets paid but she seems to be fine financially.

Quirky, Funny and Entertaining
When Jill Gooder discovers she is a witch, life gets a whole lot more interesting. When her sister, Kathy sets her up on a date, it also gets a whole lot more complicated…I’m now up to book 7 of this series, so don’t be put off by the 3-star rating. I felt the main drawback of this book was the considerable amount of detail that was repeated from Book 1 of the series. That said, I haven’t found it an issue in the later books, when the balance between pleasing new readers by filling-in the back-story, and concentrating on delivering the next episode seems much better.Regardless of what might seem a harsh rating, there is still an awful lot to enjoy in this second book of the Witch PI series: The plot is jammed packed with things going on. A mix of cozy mystery, fantasy and a budding romance thrown in for good measure. And, the pace is just as zany; once in to the story, it rips along at tremendous speed. There is the same degree of craziness that began in Book 1 too. The characters are clearly defined, varied, and even the madness of including a talking dog and cat simply adds to its unique appeal. Another thing that works especially well is the way the lead character uses ‘asides’ to communicate her thoughts directly to the reader.Full of humour throughout, there were more than enough positives to easily keep me engaged with the series.

2nd book is just as good as the first if not better
2nd book is just as good as the first if not better. Rather silly really, just wanted some light reading to help me sleep and the first one was free anyway, but somehow I just bought number 14 in the series, having become rather addicted. Quite crazy and funny especially the cat Winky. I loved all the books so far. In fact I almost found myself buying custard creams yesterday, she goes on about them so much!. I quite like the way she chats to the reader as she goes along and manages a very strange mx of skills to live a funny double life among humans, ghosts and "sups" and at the same time striving to help everybody else. - Looking forward to the remaining 14 books or however many there are by the time I get to the end

These books are addictive easy to read with a good sense of humour and wit in abundance. Jill Gooder P I and a trainee witch solves cases with the aid of her newly found magic skills.Between her two families and homes human and supernatural (sups) she manages to keep flitting between the two and with love interests in each domain makes for fun reading. The books evolve with her improving skills and the threat of the sinister dark one slight resembalance to Harry Potter in a way but I m a big H P fan so that's not an issue

Fine if you enjoy emotional abuse, not my cup of tea in a 'cozy'.
I bought this because I wanted a nice safe cozy novel and I liked the main character's personality in the first novel. I hated it becuase, in this novel, she is constantly being bullied and manipulated by relatives, especially her sister, who steals her beanie collection then makes HER feel guilty about it. Narcissistic siblings are an interesting angle to explore in a different genre. Emotional abuse is out of place in this one. Two stars rather than one because the writing itself is fine, I just didn't like the story.

Some Brilliant One-liners
Witch is when Life got Complicated (A Witch P.I. Mystery Book 2) by Adele AbbottI love the relaxed style of writing and the great 'one-liners.' Solving the mysteries is a secondary consideration to life in the 'extended family' but all the more entertaining. Interaction between the characters is superb.
