My experience is not the same as others' regarding speed of preparation
I'm not sure why so many people are worried about the long ingredient lists; my experience with the FOK cookbooks in general has been that the long lists are often simply seasonings, or because there are more vegetables in the recipe in order to provide flavor since there are no oils. I do wish there were photos, but again, this seems a theme in the FOK family of books (and indeed, Fuhrman's books are the same...not that I like it, but there is a theme, here). My almost 2 year old has enjoyed what I've put in front of her, and while I wouldn't call her a picky eater, she doesn't just eat anything I put in front of her, either. My omnivore parents also enjoy the food so far, so all in all, I call it a win. I'd also add that there is a whole section on, "quick and easy," for ideas on what to freeze and what to keep on hand to facilitate quick prep during the week. Example, I made the mushroom gravy and was able to use it for several dishes during the week, including a standard, "bowl," with beans, rice, and greens added to it. Making date paste by the pound and having half in the freezer and half in the fridge facilitates making things quickly and easily, and since it's a staple item to use in this lifestyle, worth having. I do the same when making "mayo" (animal and oil free) or ketchup, so I don't see the difference in doing it for some date paste. 4 stars because of the lack of pictures; but the recipes are sound, and my experience is that with a bit of prep, they don't seem to take as long as others imply here. I do use a food processor or chopper regularly to speed things up, and I also do a lot of prep on my weekends so that vegetables are already clean/cut, and I also take advantage of frozen veggies from Costco which may be why I can pull some of these things together quickly during the week.

Good recipes, long ingredient lists
I am a plant based eater (McDougall diet). My family is not. I was hoping the book would have more kid friendly recipes that are super easy to make and would appeal to my child. A child who is a picky eater is not going to plow into something that has 10-15 ingredients. If you have a family that is already eating rather healthy, just not plant based, this book would work very well. That said, I DO like the recipes. I have tagged SO many recipes in the book to make. I just made the black bean brownies and they are wonderful (although I had to do a few ingredient substitutions because who has sorghum flour and date paste just laying around?) While my first impression is that the recipes are wonderful, I already know they would not be good for a reluctant/picky family member. I also worry about the long list of ingredients used in each recipe; I wonder how many working families really have time to devote to this. One other small niggle I wonder about is why the authors of the book are prominently featured on the back cover, but there is NO information on the cover about Darshana Thacker who created all of the recipes. It seems a bit odd that she didn't get billing on the back cover.

I have to rate this "I like it, but
I have to rate this "I like it, but...) I feel many of the recipes are a bit labor intensive for beginners just getting started on strictly plant based foods. (making your own vegetable broth, date paste, using plant milk, etc.) Also, buying unfamiliar ingredients is difficult for me. I do believe those dedicated enough to pursue this way of eating would benefit in terms of health. I have not given the idea up entirely. I keep the book handy and am starting to experiment with a few of the simpler recipes.

I wish I can love this book
I wish I can love this book. I was excited about this since its geared for families. I have 4 kids. The info were great and offer a lot of great advice transitioning your family to a more plant based eating. However, I feel that the author did not have families in mind when creating recipes. The recipes required a lot of ingredients. For those that are diving into plant based eating, the amount of ingredients required just to cook an enchilada can make someone give up. I thought the recipes would be busy mom friendly. Alas it is not. I'm cooking three meals from this book and its already been an hour and I am yet to finish a dish. I'd recommend to just use the regular forks over knives cookbook if your thinking of going plant based as a family. I used recipes from there and my kids ate them. No difference and you don't have to spend extra money to buy this book. Or if you want to see if its worth the purchase, you can always go to your local library and see if you can borrow one before you commit in purchasing it. I wish I did.

Cooking vegan for my family
I'm excited about going vegan, and I'm the cook in the family. Now to get the rest of the family to go with the plan. Getting them to switch to non-dairy milk was super easy. Now with these recipes, getting them to enjoy new healthy low fat meals is also easy. We are on our way. The different Forks Over Knives cookbooks have different recipes in them, so they are useful as a set.

Not enough recipes, too many requirements
The book is a decent book, the intro is good and everything is well written and organized. However, like every other cookbook, I'm finding it far too complicated, they can't just have simplified versions of recipes. One is expected to have access and supply to an overwhelming number and variety of ingredients, so many I've never heard of, and I'm not new to this either, our kitchen is very well stocked with vegan food items, supplements, seeds, spices etc.And yet, the recipes in the book are almost as if for beginners? Things like mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffed roasted tomatoes... There aren't really any recipes that cover a comprehensive dinner, except a few pastas and casseroles, and seeing as it's for "family" there aren't many things in here that interest my children either!Perhaps there just aren't enough recipes...at first it looks like there are. But we just skip over so many things that don't interest us, and even the simple ones seem overcomplicated. The recipes take an incredible amount of time to prepare. There are a few good cheese recipes. Sadly most of this stuff can be found online. I bought it to help us make the switch and the bottom line is we hardly used it and now we don't touch it.
