To really know Shearing, read this!
This the definitive book on the jazz legend, Sir George Shearing. His story is told in his own words.....Alyn Shipton visited him in the Cotswolds in England with a tape recorder, asked the questions, and let Sir George tell his story. That's why this book is honest, revealing, and funny. It should be in every library!

Lullaby of Birdland - George Shearing
Such an easy read. This great jazz pianist tells his life story pleasantly and with humour. Blind from birth he left the UK in the late Forties and settled in the USA. His most famous sound was that of his Quintet, but he also accompanied some of the great singers - Nat Cole, Peggy Lee, Mel Torme etc. He married twice and was knighted for his services to music. I had the great pleasure of meeting him in a pub once and had a brief chat, charming chap. I also interviewed him over the phone in New York for a profile. His recent passing is a great loss. Read his book, you'll be glad you did.
