The best single comprehensive book on parenting
If I could have only one book on parenting this would be it. The author reviews the most prominent theories on parenting over the past several decades in light of current scientific research and practical experience. This includes recent advances in neurobiology, Carol Dweck's groundbreaking work that led to Mindset and the work of the Positive Coaching Alliance. Barish offers common sense, practical advice based on sound research, a positive approach and 30+ years working with children and families. If you are willing to reevaluate fixed ideas about parenting, especially those that have produced sub-optimal results, this is the book for you.

Clear concise parenting plan
People say that the problem with children is that they don't come with an instruction manual. It is my belief that Dr. Barish's most recent book could serve as one and make the world a better place if every newborn baby came with a copy. As a parent of three teenagers and a Psychoanalyst, I am thrilled to recommend this book to friends and patients. It takes the emphasis off "punishment" and behavior and focuses on addressing the emotional needs of a child that lead to sub-optimal behaviors in a clear direct way that any parent can try. While considering the current criticisms of the day of too lenient parenting, Dr. Barish explains that sometimes negotiating and modeling flexibility for our children is not a sin. A great and useful book!

Highly Recommend
I have read dozens of parenting, child development, and discipline books in my quest to be a good parent. I am addicted to them and have my own library of parenting books. Some of them are good, but most are just okay. Nothing has really clicked with me and nothing has seemed more relevant and practical than Pride and Joy by Kenneth Barish. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for practical, thoughtful solutions to everyday problems as well as a resource for understanding children's emotions (actually it will help you understand adult emotions too!). Highly, highly recommend.

Review of Pride and Joy
I ordered this book for my son who is raising three children. I was asked by him if I could find some information regarding raising children so I came to Amazon.com knowing what author I was looking for. Kevin Lehman's books are Christian based and practical advise in a Christian perspective. I attended one of his conferences years ago when I was raising my own children and used many of his techniques. I am still reading this book but have enjoyed it very much so far.

Physician Review
This is a wonderful book in which Dr. Barish, a child psychologist and parent, shares the wisdom he has acquired in over thirty years of counseling parents and their children. The advice is supported wtih reports of scientific studies that give the readers confidence in their decisions, and it encourages the use of relationship skills already acquired in other aspects of their lives. The information is well organized and offers specific suggestions for many common problems. It is a great gift for new parents as well as those struggling with parenting problems.

Great Book
As Barish shows us in an easy to read style, common sense and research tell us the same thing: play with your children, show interest in their interests. It something we call all do and it will, as he explains, give you more pride and joy in your relationships with your children. And, there's an additional benefit. It will help you develop shared interests that will last into their adulthood, and yours. It's hard to think of anything more joyful than that. Get this book. You won't be disappointed.

Must read parenting book
This is an excellent book on parenting, helpful for all parents, but especially from pre school through middle school. It shows parents how to tune in to their children in ways that are - unfortunately - not often written about these days. I have recommended it to the mothers in my parenting workshop - and bought copies for the parents of my grandchildren! The author is an excellent psychologist, which I know from reading the book, but also from the recommendations of colleagues.

Sheer Joy! A must read for all parents, teachers and childcare professionals
This book is a stunning read. It will touch your heart, challenge your previous values and actions and have you nodding in agreement at its logical no-nonsense approach to understanding children and the predicaments of growing up.The anecdotal stories of real children with real worries, large and small, are used to illustrate the main points and are worth the cost of the book alone. They are memorable and moving accounts of the trials and tribulations of childhood, helping to guide us along a new path, better suited to the world of today and today's children.Whether you are a parent or someone who works with children, Pride and Joy will offer you a straight forward approach to improving relationships with children and their family members, whether the problems seem trivial or insurmountable. As a headteacher of many years, I have always been somewhat skeptical of the role of child psychologists and the seemingly endless advice and help books coming out of the USA. However, this book is the grand exception that challenges my prejudices.I found Ken Barish's book absolutely illuminating, especially the sections on helping to building resilience in our children in the particularly demanding and stressful environment of our current education system. Building resilience is a crucial strategy to teach today's children. I only wish I had had this knowledge when I started out on my teaching career. It is a simply and sensitively expressed, jargon free, enjoyable read that can help us to treasure our children's journey and avoid the unnecessary cycles of criticism and resentment that we so easily fall into.We all enjoy and deserve a little "Pride and Joy"!Treat yourself NOW!
