Solid enough camera let down by poor app (currently),
I have purchased the upgraded version of this camera but the app is identical. It's well made, clearly extremely waterproof, the mounting design is excellent and the battery life is acceptable. However, It is let down by a poor app at present. I shall edit this review if and when it is improved. In terms of battery life - this is much reduced if you play back video clips from the previous day. I can well imagine it would last months without a re-charge if it was permanently on standby. However, this is more likely to be a week or two if you are capturing and playing back clips from areas where this is a lot of movement - including cats, dogs, people walking past etc. Nevertheless, given how easy it is to re-charge, this is not really a problem. Likewise the clips taken with these cameras do not take up much space so there is no need to get a big SD card, 16GB should last weeks before over-writing starts. The picture quality of captured video is not great, struggling to focus on moving objects around 4-5 metres away although without movement, the image is pretty clear. Just about OK for my purposes though - I've no idea whether other similarly-priced external cameras are any better. I suspect mains operated cameras will be, as they don't have to wake up 'from a deep power-saving slumber' as much as battery-powered systems before focusing and recording. Night vison works well with no real deterioration in picture quality except, of course, the clips are monochrome. Regardless of this, you should not expect too much of any 2MP camera bearing in mind most mobile phone cameras are 8MP or above these days. The problem with all these battery-operated cameras seems to be that there is a noticeable delay between 'waking up due to movement detection' and 'start capturing video' - 5 to 10 seconds typically. Something to bear in mind if using as a security camera. If you read the genuine reviews of all battery cameras, people always mention things like "I just about captured the delivery driver getting back into his / her van". In that respect, this camera may be better than most with just a 5-10 second delay.Other than these somewhat generic limitations, specific issues with this particular camera are mainly (I imagine) down to the app as opposed to the hardware. Playback of historical video clips is very fiddly and tiresome made worse by the fact that (a) there is no minimum time limit on clips and (b) two clips say, 10 seconds apart make it impossible to view the second clip because of the scale of the timeline and slider - also very poor contrast of grey on black background. I have an indoor camera from another manufacturer using a virtually identical app and that implementation is much better. I have fed this back to Ener-J so hopefully they can do something about improving the app. But for the moment, it is a bit of a let-down, hence the 3 star overall score.
