Overcome the hard stuff and rise!
This is one of the best self help books I've read for any age (and I've read a lot). Author Dave Pelzer writes in a way that is so encouraging and real. He shares parts of his own story of abuse (which he writes about fully in his book titled "A Child Called "It": One Child's Courage to Survive"), how he overcame challenges to rise, and he gives great guidance--the common sense that's not always so common. This book is honest, from the heart with brains."Help Yourself for Teens" is set up in three parts: Dealing with Life (five chapters), Choices You Make Now and Where they Can Lead You in Your Future (three chapters), and Personal Resolve (two chapters). It's like a letter from a personal coach, one who's really on your side and let's you know that you matter. This book tells you "You can do it!" and gives you tools. It is a timeless gem. I recommend it whole heartedly to any one who wants encouragement and inspiration.Laya Saul, author of the self help book for teens "You Don't Have to Learn Everything the Hard Way"

Inspiration for teenage tough times
I purchased this book for my niece who is about to hit the trying teen years. It is important for teenagers to have positive role models and after reading about David Pelzer's life and his ability to overcome such a difficult childhood, his life is an inspiration and exemplifies that despite your circumstances, you can still carve your own road in life.

All Dave Pelzer writes is great
I recommend every book he has written. It teaches a lot to be grateful for. His story is heartbreaking but his willingness to overcome what he lived is more motivating. I love Dave. Recommended for all.

Not for teenagers
I have two teenagers of my own and work within an industry that looks at effective behaviour change. I wouldn't let either of my children anywhere near this book. I was most disappointed. Having read all D Pelzer's other books and enjoyed every second of them, and heard such positive things about his speaking talents, I was expecting something professional and useful. Instead I found a book that re-tells his experiences mistakingly thinking that it will inspire young people to be something different. Instead, it comes across as patronising and makes no attempt to relate to anyone's experiences apart from his own.

Dave Pelzer's guide for the late teens
Teens appreciate being communicated to in a non condescending manner which makes them feel both respected and trusted. This book does both whilst guiding them through the problems that they may face, whilst making reference to the author's traumatic upbringing.
