Author Redness teaches at the Parsons School of Design and created the cyanotypes of the physicist's personal challenges as well as designing the typeface named after the Curies' spiritualist medium.Laura Wait: I use the fluidity of handwriting as a way to create energy and concentrate on the abstract nature of letters as symbols. Lettering As DrawingShanna Leino: I've kept a journal all my life and was frequently disappointed as . . . they would inevitably fall apart before I was done. . . . Making a sturdy journal that would survive the tough love of regular use was my first book-making challenge.Book sizes vary from 1" to 132" long, with contours veering from traditional to globoid to architectural.I prefer wood board, leather, metal or bone covers in Ethiopian Coptic binding, with patterned integral handsewn headbands Headbands : How to Work Them. Thus I was initially drawn to Shanna Leino and Daniel Essig's work, miniature books of hand made paper, finely carved, detailed, sewn integrating symbolic content into haptic design The Penland Book of Handmade Books: Master Classes in Bookmaking Techniques.Daniel Essig: An old typesetter's cabinet sits in my basement. Instead of lead type the tiny drawers hold fossils, shells, and other found objects. Just as type impressed meaning onto the pages of traditional books, the objects in my cabinet help my books speak. Each artist in Masters excels in the interpretation, expression, imaginative variation on the book theme idiosyncratically executed. There are book forms for which I have no fond feelings, yet am able to admire excellence in craft, ingenuity, artisanship and inventiveness as beguiling, appealing and enticing the creative impulse nevertheless.Masters in my assessment deserves 10stars (also see 500 Handmade Books: Inspiring Interpretations of a Timeless Form (500 Series)) comprising exceptional breadth and vivacity; 329 pages of visual reflection for artists who appreciate the tactile grace of handbound letters. Is it possible to be too enamored of the outmoded concept of handwritten texts in an age of digital media?

Awesome, inspiring book!
This is not a technique how-to book on bookbinding, but a very inspirational book filled with gorgeous photos of handmade books from today's best mixed-media artists. As such, I find it incredibly inspiring and challenging, the perfect coffee-table book and conversation starter, and a reference volume that I will return to again and again. I love the full color detailed photos, and I appreciate the brief text accompanying each book that gives some insight into the artist's materials and working methods. Anyone interested in learning more about the artists and their work can easily google them, and I have already found several that I would love to learn from--several teach around the country. What I love about inspirational books like this is that they help me to think differently; they sort of crack open my brain and cause me to consider new approaches to my own artwork. If you're looking for a book of inspiration in the book arts, this is one of the best. I also recommend the other title in this series, Masters: Collage: Major Works by Leading Artists.Sharilyn Miller, author of Arty Jewelry & Arty Jewelry II

Pretty on my coffee table
The book is a collection of book arts coming from different artists, exhibiting their works and such.I bought this along with the Penland book of hand made books. I was sort of tired scouring the net for different art book creations so I bought this, very efficient and looks pretty on my coffee table.I like it. A good book for a starting book artist such as myself.

Masters: Book Arts
Good overview of contemporary book art but with focus on more "traditional " definition and methods. Lots of great pictures.

same
I am a bit disappointed in this book as I have already seen quite a few of these book arts / artists' books / book objects in other books. Some of them are so old and have been around for years. Time for an update Lark and for some newer blood.

book making
I bought this thinking it would give some explanation on how to make the books, however it just shows excellent designs and you have to figure out how to make them.

Superbe !
