Short but insightful
Morrell is clearly fond of Wayne the Actor though less so of the politics he so often embodied. What emerges is a fair minded, sympathetic, yet critical look at his body of work and the man himself. For fans of Wayne and the film genre he embodied. The epilogue was also tremendously moving.

A good insight
John Wayne in a hero of mine and it seems the author likes him too. Not sure the Duke was that nice a guy, particularly in his politics, but he was certainly intelligent, no fool and a hell of a western star.

A Good Tribute to the Duke
John Wayne is one of my all time movie heroes and I never tire of his (good) films or getting to know about him.David Morrell has written a good essay about the Duke which is very respectful without being grovelling. It gives good insights into Wayne's world (sorry!) including his sometimes questionable political outlook, his constant hard drinking but also his almost always underrated acting prowess. This is a good read, but moreover a fitting and heartfelt tribute to one of the world's most beloved stars.

Ho-hum
Nothing much new here. If you want a proper and more alternative appraisal of Wayne's contribution and the wider politics of his work and life, check out Gary Wills' "John Wayne: The Politics of Celebrity" (1999)
