Stole this from Tower Records in the 90s
We had a cult movie section at our local Tower Records back in the day and this was one of the movies we boosted. I was thinking of it lately since everything in the US is so tumultuous right now. No one is getting along, we're ass-deep in a pandemic that too many people think is a hoax. Our soon to be ex-President has enabled a depressingly large subset of society to let their worst flags fly, and we're shockingly split as a nation.SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I remember the gist of the movie was how the main character accidentally started a trend and a catch phrase of So F--ing What. And at the end some girl shoots him while screaming "Everything Matters!" and then THAT replaced his nihilism and people started caring again.Aside from the commentary about how pop culture is easily swayed to contradict itself, I really just needed to see that pivotal scene, because I'm hoping we get to that "Everything Matters!!!" part of America soon. I know we're fighting the good fight, working towards a more fair and equitable future for everyone, but sometimes when reading the news it's easy to slouch and say, "Eff it." (does Amazon censor swear words? I'll err on the side of safety).Anyhoo, the movie was prime 90s indy cinema and while it was a bit cheesy in some bits (Jake Busey went a little too hard), I got what I needed from the movie. It didn't disappoint.

Movie Commentary On Media Sensationalism
..And it was made in the early '90s.They got much mileage on a lower budget film. For every cheesy line, there are two wonderfully delivered ones. The subject of the movie, the media sensationalized surviving "hero" of a terrorist hostage situation, is attempting to reintegrate back into society after months of captivity. Yet the hyper media mauling and resultant fame becomes the main focus of the movie. An even more relevant topic than it was in the '90s. Excellent movie despite the occasionally awkward quick-take line. There are familiar faces playing the parts and, for the most part, they do a good job of portraying their characters. More so than the budget allowed, I'm sure.Bonus: the soundtrack is superb! Excellent alt-90s rock of the period, along with some earlier extras. Even some Gwar music video cameo. A bit alt of the alt songwise.

Film student work
My impression watching this turkey was that it had to be the work of a film student desperately trying to impress some artsy instructor. It's all style, no substance. I got the vague impression that there was a story somewhere in this mess of flashbacks, long slow camara pans across Stephen Dorff's very trendy and stylish haircut, and yelling matches with side characters whose only function seems to be to have someone to yell with. Despite the very art-house feel of it, the story is lost, the viewer is never quite sure if the "philosophy" of the main character is meant to be taken seriously, and the style is nothing we haven't seen done better other places. All in all, I found it pretty vapid, painfully slow, and incredibly frustrating, because there is a good movie in here SOMEWHERE, if only the script had gone to someone else to make.On a side note, Toby Maguire shows up for a little while as a stoned out of his mind loser, which was a bit of a trip given where his career eventually went.

A perfect non-hit.
This is greasy-haired, mid-90's, existentialist anti-drama at it's finest. Cliff Spab walks the world, like Camus' Stranger, unaffected by the violence, sex and drugs that inundate him. He stands, balanced on the edge of a knife, sometimes loathing the people around him for their foolishness and self-serving pretensions, and at other times loving them and embracing them for their helplessness and curiousity. Not all people are capable of enjoying this movie.

SFW
This is a great film about a convenience store hostage situation that is broadcast nationally, making some of the hostages national hero's. SFW focuses on the chaos that ensues when yougive fame and fortune to disaffected youth who not only don't really care, but don't even want it(Hence the title which will become clear when you watch the film). Steven Dorff and ReeseWitherspoon are perfect in the lead roles, allowing young people or those who were once youngto identify with the situations. (Tobey Maguire of Spiderman also appears in an early cameo as a stoned teenager)
