Comprehensive
Thorough with beautiful color plates and helpful descriptions. Rather heavy for my suitcase, though.

excellent guide for the efficient identification of reef fish
An excellent guide to efficiently identifying the fish of the area. I used it to help identify hundreds of photos I took off New Britain. The quick reference index in the back is especially helpful, and the grouping of fish that look similar is useful also – though in a couple of cases the fish are grouped by how they swim, i.e. with pectoral fins, and that isn't something that can be determined from static photos. There is good information for each species, including ID characteristics, range, habitat and depth information. The introductory family accounts are also quite informative. Sometimes my fish didn't really look quite like the photos, e.g. because it was in a life stage not illustrated. But that is going to be a limitation in any compact photo ID guide–a book that includes all the variation among fish would stretch multiple volumes.

A Comprehensive Guide to Fish of hte Tropical Pacific
I have a number of Paul Humann Reef Fish identification books. They are very detailed and provide help on fish identification. Although there is extensive information, don't expect every fish to be represented. Also, many fish are very similar or differ from juvenile to adult. You also need to pay attention to the range for the fish in the pictures. You may think you have just found a rare fish when in fact, it does not inhabit the area where you are.All the details of how to use the book are in there so take time to see how to best use this excellent reference.I recently used this book for my dives on the Great Barrier reef and Coral Sea.

Great pictures!
I bought this book before a trip to Zanzibar. It was helpful for identifying the different versions of fish that we saw while there however it was missing a few so I ended up getting another book that our dive shop had available. Overall though it is fairly thorough and the pictures are great. We have several from this series and they are all very helpful.

Love these books
I have the three book set for Caribbean diving which include fish, coral and creatures. But, when you dive in places like Fiji, Hawaii, Palau, Micronesia, there are different fish there. This book meets a need. Now I’m thinking about getting the creature book that goes with it, there’s not a coral book so I’m going to guess that the corals the same all around the world?

Great photos and information. Very useful.
Great book! Used this in all my dives and the photos are great which makes it easy for identification and the text info are great help as well. Most of the reef fish that I saw are available on the book.As expected, the book is a bit heavy but I do not mind at all since I know it has a lot of information that I need. If you are a frequent traveler and want to travel light you might have some issues with the weight.

Beautiful Guide
I have had the Caribbean Reef Fish ID book for years and it always comes along with me on my dive trips. I'm planning a trip to the Philippines next year and bought this book to try to learn some of fish that I'll potentially see. This is guide is very in depth and shows you how to identify fish at different life stages and general features for identifying certain groups of fish.
