Niki Lauda Meine Story
F**H
Nicki,the King Of Formula1
I read this book years ago when it came out and I just finished reading it again.I was very happy to find another copy of this book as mine was stolen years ago.Nicki is not only a driver but an automotive genius and a trained multi-engine aircraft Pilot that runs his own airlines.Nicki was severely burned in a crash that was one of the worst I had witnessed to that date. The effect on him was not only physical but mental and anyone else but Nicki would more than likely never have driven again and would have become a recluse and never be seen in public again. His face and head were so badly burned that he lost most of one ear and when he was first out of hospital it was hard to look at him he was that badly burned he still had bandages on his head and was forcing his drivers helmet down over these so he could drive. It was a display of raw courage and grit that I wil never forget. This book explains it all as Niki lets you into his head so to speak and gives you an unpresidented view of Formula 1 racing from the drivers point of view, warts and all. He holds back nothing as he explains his earlier years growing up and shows you how a great driver is born as they say.The one thing that will move you as you read his account of his life after the accident is the courage it takes for these drivers to strap themselves into a Formula 1 car and face the possibility of injury or death in this most dangerous sport in the world.Niki lets you experiance this nerve wracking world like never before in this wonderful book.I highly recommend it and am so glad that I could find another copy.-Floyd Smith

Well written; book is engaging from start to finish!
A great insight into what goes through a Formula one champion's mind; how is handled by the press and his contempories; I enjoyed reading this book!

Great Story
I felt lucky to be able to get hold of a copy of this book. As a big Formula 1 fan for years, I enjoyed watching Niki drive at Monte Carlo and Spa. Now I understand where he came from and what he went through to get into the sport.

Niki is a bit....boring.
The first 40% of the book were interesting. High pace from laudas youth and family troubles to his first foray into racing and the Ferrari years. Then, somehow, after nurnburg crash it lost pace and direction.

it is entirely plausible a character like Lauda would find continued employment with "the sport
Niki Lauda spends most of this book insulting people he is giving back handed compliments to. He is an Austrian and as most know, an Austrian is a rich German much as a Swiss is a rich Austrian. It must have been hell to be around him, an admitted self-centered egotistical driver in the biggest sports franchise Europe can muster. Americans came up with a term to describe Niki and his ilk, Eurotrash. How Mercedes Benz chose him to be part of their present F1 operation is a testament to how F1 is a club. Since Niki and supremeo Bernie go way back, it is entirely plausible a character like Lauda would find continued employment with "the sport." Reading this book made me glad more than ever to be an American and free of the paradigm of "the old world."

This is the best book ever written on motorsports
Lauda hits the sweet spot with this book. You are taken behind the scenes of Formula 1 from an insider's insider. You learn what it is like to drive for "The Old Man" Enzo Ferrari and Mclaren's Ron Dennis. What I found fascinating was how Lauda applied his cold non-emotional approach to racing to his life in general. In days where superstar athletes are out 3 months for a hamstring injury, Lauda was back racing after receiving "the last rights" from his near fatal crash at the Nurburgring. If you love racing, you will love this book.
