Finest knife in a list of fine knives by Knife King
The knife that arrived is a strong sturdy knife with a beautiful Damascus blade. This is a quality blade that is sure to satisfy...My first impressions were...in a word..."Spectacular". The Damascus pattern on the blade of this knife flows like rivlets in a stream of liquid metal creating a captivating image. I've seen damascus blades that have bald sections where the pattern development is minimal to none existent. I have now purchased several models from Knife King, I have been very fortunate to have received knives that ALL have possessed beautifully patterned blades. The blade of this kinfe is quite thick, with the folds clearly visible throughout. This is a real damascus blade. The blade arrived very sharp, slicing through paper with little to no resistance. I've read reviews about these knives stating that they don't hold an edge, I'm pleased to say that my example that I received holds an edge very well. Since its purchase the knife has only needed a light touch up with my Lansky dual grit stone to bring the edge back to a incredible sharpness. You should know up front that these knives are prone to rust...I treated mine with a product called "Break Free CLP"....no rust of any kind. I wrapped my knife in paper towels then soaked the towels with "Break Free CLP". I slipped it into a ziplock bag overnight, and wiped it clean the next day. The knife has sat in its sheath exposed to the unusually high humidity that we've had here this summer....no rust. I like it when a plan comes together. "Break Free CLP" is a quality penetrating oil and it will add years to the beauty of your knife as well. The fine fitting burl wood handle contrasts nicely with the Damascus blade. The grip is sleek and fits nicely in the hand. The brass rivets holding the bone scales to the blade are strong and sturdy...a nice accent to this fine product. This has quickly become my favorite of the knives that are being offered by Knife KingThe sheath is made of a thick quality leather. The design is very rugged and the clasp that holds the knife into the sheath is well made and does its job effectively. For the price...YES...I'm very pleased. So pleased, that I looked over the sales listing here at Amazon.com and picked out 2 more styles.

... seems to be taking a star off for the crappy sheath, or for the lengthy shipping process
Everyone on here seems to be taking a star off for the crappy sheath, or for the lengthy shipping process, but I was anticipating both as a result of that. This blade is fantastic. The finest of it's class I've had the pleasure of owning, and I've had a SOG as well as a CRKT that were both excellent. The damascus is VERY real, the edge is just about sharp enough to shave with, and given the very stout thickness of the blade (approx. 1/8'), thats remarkable. True, fit and finish aren't flawless in regards to handle to tang, but not too bad. Similar blades made in the US, versus (due to the lack of manufacturing info, or country of origin, along with the name 'Helmand', I strongly suspect) southern Afghanistan(!), often go for $300. I'm stoked about it. It's quite literally magickal. However, you will totally slice your finger (eventually) trying to quickly draw from the cumbersome, ill-fitting, and tacky sheath that comes with it. I found that with a little breaking in, this one fits perfect, and looks much, much better : https://www.amazon.com/gp/r.html?C=WOBS52892R54&K=AQAEGEALZA5WX&R=1PT3PD3B4NDIB&T=C&U=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fdp%2FB004QBAMU2%2Fref%3Dpe_385040_128020140_TE_3p_dp_1&A=XHZGDCIT9Z3FMEY7AAN1ZTTHURWA&H=U2AMVRELI85VBGEXOTPOZWOHW5CA -P.S. Don't forget to oil your blade occasionally! Damascus steel is porous, and very thirsty. It can rust otherwise. Anyway, I hope this was helpful :)

The knife is worth the money.
The knife can be used as a souvenir, he is handsome, well-visible steel structure. Steel is really a multi-layer, not imitation. Sheath of poor quality. Twice placing the knife in the sheath, we corrosion on the blade. Oxidized rivets leave marks on the metal blade. The knife blade is uneven, with sharpened pencil sharpener on Apex-Pro or Lansky noticeable at the tip. It is difficult to make a smooth carts. Blade thickness of 4.75 mm. The knife fits comfortably in the hand, but with a thick blade is hard work. Damascus steel in nature will always corrode. The wooden handle is not the best material, requires constant care, is afraid of water. The knife sharpened at 20 degrees, you can shave. But take it with you camping, hunting is impractical. When using a sheath bundled get rusty knife. Resistance to the blunting of the blade until the check has failed. Put 4 in advance. (RU)

Nice knife but terrible scabbard
Knife is nice but the sheath was a major disappointment. Doesn't fit properly and the strap doesn't hold it in place.

Not quite as expected, but nice.
Typically I will praise Knife King for their knives, they are well constructed and beautiful and I have 4 of their knives, but this Helmand-1 is not up to par. The handle is a lighter grain wood than what I was expecting and the sheath does not seem to go to this knife since it fits oblong and offset. The blade is as expected, sharp and straight. I will use this knife for a camping knife, it is not the work of art that the others I purchased are, it will be great for around the campsite.
