Open Studio: Do-It-Yourself Art Projects by Contemporary Artists

I bought this book for an art session hosted online by the Metropolitan Museum in NYC. The writers of the book were present and told how they interviewed artists and selected projects for inclusion in the book. The participants were invited to do the Wegman project. I am no artist but I had fun. The following weekend we did an art project together as a family. This is not a book for the bookshelf or coffee table but one to actively use for art projects. The book has enough project ideas to keep families or groups of friends busy for a long time. Even if you are no Michelangelo, you can acquire some art skills by doing some projects.

This is a gorgeous inside look into the studios of famous artists and their creative processes and inspirations.Even better, the book is full of do-it-yourself art projects designed by the artists themselves. In the time of covid when we are trapped at home, I can think of no better way to spend my time than to complete these approachable and accessible projects. The process of creating these designs is fascinating and fun as well as meditative and soothing. A perfect gift for everyone on your Christmas list, including yourself!

Projects are not good / nice cover content very weak

I have enjoyed this book for many reasons. It’s interesting to see what each artist offers as an activity for the reader, but also just to see their studios where they work and to hear what inspires them is very fulfilling. Inspiration is everywhere!

I couldn't be happier to own this book with the winter months approaching. I'm an arts enthusiast but not exactly a crafts-y person, so I thought I was just going to dig in to the studio visits and interviews from a different angle but I am actually excited to make a bunch of these projects!! It's a pretty ingenious entry to connecting to contemporary artists -- and to my own clumsy inner art maker! I love it. Would gift it to everyone I know this holiday season if I could.

I love that this book invites the reader into the studios of 17 contemporary artists. Each artist presents a do-it-yourself project, based on his or her own style, complete with templates. It's a wonderful resource for teachers as well as art makers who want to either faithfully reproduce the projects or use them as inspirational jumping-off points for one's own art. The book's format is quite large, 9 and 1/2" by 11 and 1/2" and of high quality. Overall. it's a beautiful addition to one's library.
