One of the greatest UFO movies ever made. At the time it was made, I think it was the best.
First, you may essentially disregard any comments from people about the transfer quality of the movie written before 2013. They were referring to a now obsolete version which did indeed not have a good transfer. This 2013 blu-ray edition and its companion DVD version are a remastered, clean work. My blu-ray copy looked really good in 1080p and it was letterbox, taking up my whole tv screen. And it was about time. I've been waiting years for this to be remastered and released, one of my favorite movies as a child. I saw it new in theaters when I was 8 years old and I always remembered the first shot of the spaceship outside the space shuttle, the entry and exploration of the ship once recovered, and all the cool interior shots of the craft. There has really never been another film that went into such detail to make a 'realistic' futuristic UFO and try to learn about it. Also one of the few movies ever made, in fact it may have been THE first movie to feature the space shuttle extensively. As other reviewers have stated, this movie involves a big government cover up story with science fiction and it works. Oddly enough, at the time, I scoffed at the lack of integrity of the government people involved in the cover up in this movie and thought things like that could not happen. If only I could have seen 2014. It's strange I should be writing this review after all that has actually happened the past few years. Like recently, our movie tells the story of two astronauts who witnessed a UFO disaster in space (more generically they knew more than the administration wanted them to) who the presidential administration wants to shut up so they send government goons out to HARASS and INTIMIDATE them. Sound familiar? The story in this movie is in two main streams. First is the science team who have recovered the spacecraft and are studying it and the recovered aliens in a hangar at a government base. Second, is the story of two astronauts that the president's chief of staff and some cronies have framed and blamed publicly for crashing a satellite they were supposed to be launching from the space shuttle, and getting a fellow astronaut killed. Also like recently, the president is trying to get re-elected and doesn't want any bad press right before the election so they weaponize government against U.S. citizens..Hmmm...The astronauts spend their time in the movie trying to find out what the government has done with the craft, and trying to clear themselves. When bar-ack O-bam... I mean the presidential staff in the movie can't silence these two by weaponizing the tools of government against them, they try to Seal Team Six them. Very ironically prophetic movie in retrospect. I thought many of the special effects and the spacecraft interior have held up to the test of time and look good and futuristic even today. There were only a couple of parts that looked hokey, like when the UFO lands and is seen entering the atmosphere like a meteor. There were also a few parts of the story that I was saying "Yeah Right, I'll bet that's what would actually happen". The rest was still relevant today, I believe. The acting was really good. There were a lot of well known TV actors in this movie, and one bonafide movie star in Darren McGavin, who played the NASA deputy director and who was in charge of the team investigating the ship. There is also some good action in this movie. There are car chases, cars going off overpasses and exploding, and more. People should know that the opening of this movie explains that the story is based on actual rumor and whistle blowing going on at the time. It's pretty well swept under the carpet now, but there was a rumor of a second Roswell type incident that had happened recently. I wish I could remember more about that now. Yeah, there is not a dull moment in this movie, it was really well written and enjoyable. Those alien bodies they recover are probably the best I've ever seen attempted. They are hard to forget, even though humanoid. I don't want to give away to many plot details, so I better stop there. One note of trivia, I am from Utah and the company that made this movie was based in Utah. They were well known at the time for their speculative but interesting documentaries, as other reviewers have mentioned, but also famous for their creation of the TV show 'The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams', which ran from 1977-1978. Sadly, they are no longer in business, the ownership and production of the current movie was listed in the credits as Olive Films, and Paramount. I am indeed glad this movie is finally out on blu-ray and looking real good, but I must mention the fact that there were absolutely no extras. A commentary by surviving actors or production people would have been greatly appreciated, considering the story that took place. I know actor James Hampton, who co-starred, is still alive, for one. There was no trailer either. I still remember the trailer from 1980. NO ONE KNOWS WHAT'S INSIDE....HANGAR 18. No actor bios or trivia, not even a still gallery. I really give the package 4.5 stars because of those omissions. So, enjoy. Hope you will like it as much as I always have.

Great Customer service
I recieved the BlueRay last week. I could not get the English version just the Spanish. They texted me extremely fast and told me what I had to do. I'm not real high tech kinda guy more old school when it comes to this stuff. They were wonderful and in only about 1 minute it was showing the English version of this old school movie. Great customer service and I would highly recommend this company. Again great customer service thank you.

bluray details and quality
Well after almost 30 years, finally hangar 18 is on bluray and you can watch it on your 16:9 TV without stretching it. Previous VHS,DVD releases and the netflix and amazon prime versions are in 4:3 format. The bluray release don't have any extras, the main menu has 2 options: play the movie and the chapters. Audio quality is acceptable for a mono. The video quality is far away better than previous releases (of course) but also a little bit of high contrast. Perhaps to enhance the deterioration of the old original film itself. There are video noise in several scenes, at the beginning with the space shuttle shots where the space sometime turns to dark blue.Overall the bluray video quality now can reveal the special effects of this 80's film, specially space shuttle scenes, and the end with the plane crashing the hangar.Other revelations about quality is you can read almost all the space shuttle panel, and inside the UFO too, specially the panel buttons. The images on the big screen inside the UFO are more vivid, the symbols and the graphics, I notice more pink variation colors than instead of the red on previous releases. The bluray doesn't have subtitles or any other audio format.

Who needs Area 51 when we have HANGER 18???
Fun cover-up/conspiracy flick has lots to offer. Never caught this as a kid but really enjoyed finally getting a chance to see it. The film moves at a brisk pace and the plot surely must have influenced the X-Files. The film seems to have borrowed a bit from Three Days of The Condor and Capricorn One, among others. Initially, I wasn't sure about Gary Collins in a lead role, but he's actually quite good here, and I was really surprised by James Hampton's performance. He was almost always relegated to supporting bit parts in movies and TV shows but he holds his own as Collins' astronaut buddy. Just lots & lots of 1970's character actors here doing their thing: Phil Abbot, Joseph Campanella, Steven Keats, B-Movie bit acting legend William Schallert, Cliff Osmond, Stuart Pankin. The list goes on & on. Darren McGavin is in full blown, scenery-chewing 'Carl Kolchak' mode as head of NASA flight command Harry Forbes, who goes from mildly incensed to full-on frothing at the mouth gonzo when he learns that a UFO not only caused the destruction of his latest space shuttle mission's top secret satellite cargo BUT, more importantly, it has landed on Earth - intact! Robert Vaughn plays yet another cold, manipulating sleazeball character who is working behind the scenes to hide the UFO and keep a lid on things for a couple of weeks, until after the Presidential election. He could play roles like this in his sleep. The F/X are pretty good for their time, even more so when you consider who financed this thing. I guess the gang at Schick-Sunn Pictures decided to take a break from searching for Bigfoot & Historic Jesus in order to give us this little gem. Surprisingly, this movie actually gets better as it goes along. Collins & Hampton are outraged when the satellite disaster is pinned on them in order to hide the truth. As they dig deeper into the mystery, the corrupt forces behind the UFO cover-up escalate their attempts to keep prying eyes at bay and the two astronauts find themselves thrown out of the frying pan and into the fire. The tension starts to mount as the veil of conspiracy that Vaughn and his Washington flunkies have weaved starts to unravel. There are some plot holes, but as a fan of the genre I can easily forgive that. The DVD for this looks pretty nice; with a good picture & clean sound. There are no extras but the film itself is the real prize. I had a great time watching it unfold and consider it worthy of repeat viewings. Probably should have just opted for the Blu-ray, but oh well. 4 stars for this precursor to The X-files. It's pretty safe viewing for the whole family. Pop some popcorn and settle in for this government cover-up relic.
