Pop culture was never the same after Breakin' erupted onto movie screens across the globe, exposing the mainstream world to the raw energy and intensity of pop locking and breakdancing! Featuring the dance movement's top superstars (with a special appearance by rap icon Ice-T), Breakin paved the way for countless urban hip-hop films to come. Lucinda Dickey, Adolfo "Shabba Doo" Quinones and Michael "Boogaloo Shrimp" Chambers star as a struggling trio of dancers who take ona rival gang in a battle to determine the best dance crew in the streets. Packed with fast-paced moves and featuring Boogaloo Shrimp's now-famous street-sweeping scene, this invigorating dance movie is a nonstop floor show of "excitingly staged'solid fun" (San Francisco Chronicle)!

A Moonwalk Down Memory Lane!
I purchased this DVD just to see Turbo's (Michael Chambers) electro-magical, broomstick dance routine again. If you want to recreate this scene for yourself (like I do), you can download the MP3 of Kraftwerk's "Tour de France" from Amazon, grab a broom from the closet, and start practicing in your garage. I saw this movie when I was a kid, and my brothers and I did in fact practice in our garage. Having almost mastered some of the meat-n-potatoes moves, we even entered a few break dancing competitions. I don't recall receiving any trophies, but I still have an aching back to show for my hours of working on "the helicopter"--a fairly acrobatic move that requires strength, balance, flexibility, and lots of shoulder bruising to master.Look for a young and goofy looking Jean Claude Van Damme who appears as an uncredited extra in the beach scene where Special K (Lucinda Dickey) meets Turbo and Ozone (Adolfo Quinones). Seeing this movie so many years later, I think it plays really well as a comedy but not necessarily in the way it was originally intended. The fashions, the lingo, and much of the dancing are ridiculous enough to be funny. And Ice-T's roses-are-red-violets-are-blue style of rapping wouldn't be good enough for Saturday morning cartoons these days, but it's a priceless snatch from the time capsule that is Breakin'. I give this movie a 5-star rating simply because it's a fun moonwalk down memory lane.

Body Rockin' '80s Classic!
I purchased the soundtrack when this movie came out in 1984, but I never really saw the complete movie. When it was on TV, I always seemed to catch the last half-hour. Luckily, I was able to find a new VHS copy, and I must say it's one of my favourite movies in my collection. It stars Lucinda Dickey as an up & coming dancer who befriends two breakdancers (Adolpho Quinones & Michael Chambers)who fight for the respect of the dance community to get break dancing taken as a serious art form. The soundtrack is still great after all of these years, and the story is total '80s "breakploitation". Even though it has been criticized for being total trash, and plagued with bad acting, just remember that this movie was the starting vehicle for all the actors involved. I never found the acting THAT BAD. It's a movie that will WOW you with solid jams, and hype mid-'80s fashion, plus lots of high energy breakdancing and other forms of modern dance that make the film interesting & entertaining. I was lucky to find a new VHS copy of this movie, but it would be nice if it was available on DVD in North America. In conclusion, if you really like '80s movies, then this one will not disappoint.

Breaking one
I like the music and dancing. But what I don't like that half way it stops playing and it never continues the movie so I don't see how it ends.

The Original Breakdancing Movie!
Cast your mind back to the eighties... Were you one of those kids who ruined your new windcheater trying to spin on your back?? Or nearly broke your neck attempting a head-spin?? If so, this film's for you!!It's a feel-good movie (suitable for all ages) about two street dancers - Ozone & Turbo - teaming up with a professional dancer - Kelly aka Special K - who enter a formal dance competition, hoping to win the strait-laced judges over with their fresh new street style.Okay, so there's no Oscar worthy performances to speak of and if you look closely, you can tell that budget and time scales were tight. But... WHO CARES!Breakdancing has made a major comeback in recent years and I'll be the first to admit that the routines the youngsters are churning out these days are a lot more polished and dynamic than they used to be. But this film is a classic example of how it was back in the day, when kids used to walk around with their boom boxes and their mats, ready to get down at any given opportunity.Even after all these years, I still enjoy all of the dance scenes, my favourite being the 1st Radiotron clash, closely followed by the rehearsal in the dance studio, before the big competition. Turbo definitely steals the show throughout the movie. If after watching Breakdance, you're not humming one of the tunes from its excellent soundtrack and/or you don't find yourself standing in front of the mirror to see if you can still pull off at least one of those old moves, I'd be very surprised. With a decent enough storyline and elements of humour, as well as a message of endurance and hope, you could do a lot worse than having this classic film as part of your DVD collection.
