Good value - no regrets with this radio.
Great sound and size. Not many portable radios have the AM (medium wave) band at an affordable price like this one. Good quality material and feature rich. If you can't set the time and date then do a system reset but memorize how to set the system language before hand because after the reset everything is in Chinese. After that no problems. If I could request two more features it would be to have weather band and to add bluetooth so that you could use wireless headphones. Otherwise, worth the money.

the second one wasnt any better, just cheap
After getting the first one replaced, the second one wasnt any better, just cheap. Pony up and get the C Crane Witness unit, costs more butreally works great!

Excellent sound quality with just the combination of features that I wanted
I bought this device mainly for the MP3 player functionality, with the radio function secondary.First, let me mention the specific features that I wanted before buying this.1) Illuminated display with readable numbers that show the turned in radio station in radio mode and with MP3 player mode, the file name, and elapsed timeThis device has all of that, plus it also shows the total run time, the file # out of the total number of files for the MP3 file being played...nice.2) Resume function for MP3 file to pick up right at the point where the file was being played before being powered down.Yep, it properly resumes at the exact same point it was playing when powered back on.3) Lock to allow the buttons to be disabled until unlocked. It has a lock key that locks up all buttons when held in for one second, plus (a nice surprise) it also disables the rotary dial on the side of the device.4) Fast forward and rewind function while playing MP3 filesI'm happy to say that the ">>!" and "|<<" buttons on the front that play the next and previous file respectively when pressed also serve as the fast forward and rewind buttons when held in until released, a really nice feature that surprisingly few MP3 players with an integral speaker have.5) Dedicated volume buttonsYes, there are dedicated buttons for this purpose on the right side of the device that adjust the volume either up or down.6) Not an absolute requirement, but a headphone jack would be nice.Yes, it has a jack for a headphone, but with the nice bonus of an AUX (think line-in) jack that allows the device to serve as a speaker for any other audio device plugged into it with an inexpensive Aux cable.7) A telescoping antenna would be a great help for better FM reception.Yes, there is a telescoping antenna on the left top edge that provides surprisingly good FM reception.8) A removable lithium battery of a type that is easy to buy when more capacity is needed or when the factory battery eventually wears outYep, the unit has a removable battery of the BLC-2 type that can be gotten for about $5-$10 depending on brand and capacity.9) A USB port that serves both to charge the battery and to move audio files to and from the MicroSDHC cardIt does indeed have a USB port that serves both of these purposes, but I have to say that the data transfer rate of that port is the one weak feature of this device, with transfer rates at least 3-5 times slower than all of my other MP3 players that also have USB 2.0 ports.I have no idea why the transfer rate with the port is so poor, but I wonder if it's either operating at the old USB 1.x rate from a design mistake, or if it's possible that a firmware update could correct this problem.Yes, the USB port still properly transfers data, but be warned that it will take several times longer than any other device to move the same amount of data and expect to account for that extra time before ejecting and unplugging it.This last issue also relates to the website for the manufacturer, www.degen.com.cn, which makes any web browser I use give a warning that the site is malicious (probably an error in how the site is constructed, but I'm no expert) site, and it's rather poorly laid out, with no "Support" section for firmware updates and other such things. In fact, if anyone has any idea where to find the firmware for Degen radio/players, because I'd like to see if a firmware update on the DE28 would fix that transfer rate issue and turn my review from a four-star to a five-star rating.

Excellent radio needs bugs fixed.
The DG28 is a replacement for a KA29 I returned due to a CPU crash that occurred when I used a power supply while I played the radio, I loved the performance and features of both radios till the CPU crash. When directed to the Degen website to down load the program to fix my DG28, my browser raised redflags warning the site installs malware. The DG28's CPU crash was caused by a Nokia brand btty I had purchased as a back up btty. When I 1st received the DG28 I used my Nokia btty to play the radio. When the Nokia ran down, I switched to the Chinese brand btty that came with the DG28. The problem occurred when using the Nokia btty again. The Chinese btty is a little longer than the Nokia; and caused the Nokia to rattle around in the case with intermittent contacts. I tried to fix the problem by inserting a piece of paper to act as a spacer behind the Nokia btty. Unfortunately this was a temporary fix as the CPU crashed a short time later. Though I am frustrated with my bad experience, I would still like to own a Kaito radio after they work the bugs out. The am, fm , and sw reception was on par with very expensive large radios I own.The mp3 playback was superb.

The sound is very nice, especially given the small size of the speaker
The sound is very nice, especially given the small size of the speaker ... The radio is very versatile and I love being able to insert a micro sd card to play podcasts, etc. The fact that this unit records radio is wonderful, etc.

Avoid This Radio
Like others have pointed out, this radio has problems. The battery this came with is no good. It's already bulging to a size where it doesn't fit the battery case. It only runs if you sit the battery in it and charge it while it's on. It feels cheap like it's made of cheap materials. The sound is terrible coming out of the speakers. I was under the impression that the FM frequency could go down to 64, but I can only get it to go to 87.1. I do not recommend this device.

Save your money, don't buy it.
It is difficult to switch from AM bands to FM bands on this little pocket radio. I thought it would be a good MP3 recorder but it does not even do that much. This radio device is a waste of money.
