A Life of Jesus

Good

I had read the book before (library), but am now very happy to have my own copy. Fortunately, its late arrival did not interfere with my pleasure in reading it, especially during Holy Week.

read it when I was a missionary in Japan and it holds up for a second reading. It is a monumental work.

fascinating. I didn't realize Japanese culture is very negative about fathers- apparently they are quite harsh in Japanese culture- and the mother is the loving one- so Endo writes a life of Jesus emphasizing his feminine/nurturing qualities. I learned from him that Christianity did not take root in Japan because the harsh father images, most especially in the OT but even in some Jesus stories, turned folks off. So it was interesting to read this. I did notice that he completely avoided the miracles- so perhaps Endo was just wanted to put forward the nurturing humanity of Jesus and not deal with anything else?Anyway- I would not reread-but it was a very interesting peak into how a person within a culture offers and god-image that is able to be received by that culture. Endo a Catholic who wrote incredible novels- his one The River still haunts me-- and he always has a Jesus/suffering servant figure in his books--now I know why.

This is a very inspiring book.

Fantastic interpretation of Jesus.

Endo definitely presents a unique aspect of the miracle of the christ which certainly is understandable from even an agnostic viewpoint. Highly recommend.
