Prince of Sparta (CoDominium Future History Book 2)

The Finish of the Helot War and Prince Lysander's Attaining Maturity as the CoDominium Disintegrates
The third and final book of that I call the Lysander Trilogy is a solid, well written novel. It has a few plot lines: Lysander's reaching adulthood and becoming a leader rather than a subordinate; the development of Sparta's army as the nation's principal defense rather than the Swiss Militia system built around the Spartan phratries; the evolution of the Helot rebels; the dissolution of the CoDominium and its consequences; and the Fifth Battalion of Falkenberg's Mercenary Legion finding a home and friends, as opposed to employers, on Sparta. The plot lines knit together into a seamless whole.Pournelle and Sterling pace the action well. None of the characters, even the minor ones, are two-dimensional. They change over the course of the novel, sometimes in unexpected ways, but always consistently with what has gone before. I don't believe anyone who has read Prince of Mercenaries and Go Tell the Spartans will be either disappointed or dissatisfied. The story is told concurrently with the New Washington campaign of the main body of Falkenberg's Mercenary Legion, ten months' transit time away. Major Owensford and the Fifth Battalion are on their own, and he is forced to make decisions affecting Spartan and his battalion that would give even the very experienced Christian Johnny pause. It's said that young people grow up fast in a wartime environment. Prince Lysander and Peter Owensford dramatically demonstrate just how true this is. I can't say a great deal more without giving away plot points, but anyone who understands the military ethos will be well satisfied with how things turn out for the characters, the Spartan culture, and the Legion.

Terrific Science Fiction
Military Science Fiction at its best. Gritty and interesting. Great characters, great plot, great action. The author clearly knows what he is talking about when he gets into battle scenes, because they are so real you find yourself feeling like you are right there. I generally care more about the plot and whether it moves along and makes sense, but in reality, if the characters are lame and one-dimensional, I just don't care about them. No problem in this book. The characters are interesting and three-dimensional. An excellent book, like all of the Faulkenberg legion books. Buy them all!

another great book by Jerry Pournelle
Once again, another great book by Jerry Pournelle. I would classify these as beach reads, except I read them during the fall. Mr. Pournelle does a great job with the tactics and the backroom manouvering, and draws the reader in to the world he has created.

It needs updating but it is still excellent
This story is how Sparta became the seat of power and governance. If you are a reader of Jerry Pournelle and Robert Carr then you will follow along with little effort

Education wrapped in entertainment
It was a fun read that gave insight into a society`s fight for survival against a movement designed to destroy it from within.

Action tale
Another good summer read. Just enough violence and sexual innuendo to keep the story flowing and keep one rooting for the Spartans.

Very good read
As a keen follower of the series it was good to be able to fill in more of the background to its development. Good pace and very addictive.
