Great opening to this apocalypse Story!
Initial intro to the main characters is well written and gets you into the developing dynamics of the storyline very quickly!

Getting out of the city.
I still think that the killing is a little early in this book. But the looting and burning other peoples property sounds about right.

Great Read!
I’m happy to know there are more books in this series. I love the way the author is building the characters and allowing us to know them better from her last series. Thank you.

Turbulant
What a great book. Action from the start to the end. I live by Ohare airport so reading about the streets by my house makes this book even more enjoyable.

good read for post-apocalypse fans, a little heavy on the "I told you so"s
Absorbing read for fans of this genre. I liked how the characters' stories wove into each other. You definitely get invested in what happens to the main character. The only thing that drove me crazy was the repeated hero worship of the father, "why didn't I listen to you?' and "he saw it coming" were repeated over and over, we get it already.

Believable, interesting story
I read lots of eotwawki books and thoroughly enjoyed this one. it is interesting to see the kind of things it takes to survive disasters. Set in Illinois, there are plenty of scenes of violence and also plenty of scenes of good things and good people. On to book two.Real people with real problems! The good and the bad come face to face in small town Illinois and large city Chicago.

Great read, although some spots were done just wrong (Spoilers)
The story itself flowed really well. I loved the character development and the back and forth between chapters. With all that being said some things really bothered me *SPOLIERS AHEAD * I am curious as to if the author did any research into hermon addicts. In my opinion he did not, some of the things just didn't seem right to me, although carls character was who he was, the drugs anf their effects were off... I hated the way they killed off Emma's parents. Like they randomly run off and get killed ? At least of the dad look at Maddie and say with his eyes " save my daughter ". Also, why develop Kelly as a character and show his warm side with his grandfather, just to kill him off like he was as terrible as Carl. Easily could have let Kelly head back and live out his time protecting his grandfather... other then that, great book.

Good Books, but Not for Young Adults
I am a K-12 Librarian, and I bought the series hoping to put it in my library, since it comes up on a search for Young Adult Thrillers in Amazon. No Way! Maybe I am a prude, but the extremely graphic language and gratuitous violence is definitely adult-level. I enjoyed the series a lot, but I am an adult. If you are a parent, and you are comfortable subjecting your child to this type of material, then go for it, but as a school librarian, it is not my place to do so. My only real criticism of the book is that, in an attempt to sound authentically military, the use of military slang was overdone. If I read "keep your head on a swivel" one more time, I think I was going to throw up! Don't get me wrong, though, I did enjoy the series immensely.

Blanket-cover star ratings aren't real. An Opinion is not the same as a Review.
So, as the title says, I feel providing a blanket-cover star-rated opinion is a poor way to review a book, much less anything. A book is a craft that education, skill, determination, and blood, sweat, and tears, (not to mention hundreds of dollars) goes into. And to summarize that with a few stars that determine the author's entire success and reputation is repulsive. Now that I've gotten that out of my system, here is my REAL, HUMAN opinion of this particular book.I have given this book a 4 star rating as I don't think my personal OPINION of this book is the same as a legit REVIEW of this book. One's OPINION of something is NOT the same as one's REVIEW of something. However, BOTH are important for prospective buyers to know if it's worth their time and/or money. So, I will provide both.My opinion of this book has no right being captured in a star-rating as my opinion should not have the power to tank this book's success. My opinion of this book is...low. if I had to give it a star-only rating, I would put it at a 1 or maybe a hesitant 2. Despite many attempts, I have little to say about it, and I have not finished it, so my opinion would not be fair.My review of this book includes the effort and energy and passion that I can tell were involved in the writing of this book, and so they deserve their merit as well to the author.Overall, I think if it becomes a possibility for this writer in the future, they should look into getting a really thorough beta-reader AND a developmental editor AND a writing coach. There were many faux-pas made in the segment that I have read so far, and some serious "Writer Don'ts!" peppered throughout that really grabbed too much focus and made it difficult to get into the flow of the book. There were inconsistencies in what was happening at certain points, and the visual that was given from the back summary of the book was dramatically different from the specifics of those visuals in the actual reading which was both distracting and disappointing. The part I have read so far played out as though it could be watched on-screen and some forgiveness could be given to some of the poor camera effects as long as the action kept up and the acting was decent. But as a written work (as in: not a screenplay), you cannot write your story as though it is happening on-screen; to focus on certain details tells the reader to take important note of those details. To then, in the next sentence, show the reader there was no purpose in focusing on those details...it just makes the writing choppy and hard to follow, and, honestly, hard to WANT to follow. Just as an example.I personally don't believe I will finish this book as it has no draw for me - neither in how I feel about the characters, their struggles, their personalities, their outcomes, their fate, nor in the writer's written "voice" that lends such a lack of elegance to the narration that I feel I cannot get from one scene to the next without my eyes bugging out in confusion and my eyebrows shooting up into my hairline as I try to piece together what image the writer was trying to provide - and I will not read the other books by this author. I feel the cost of this book was not worth either the content nor the physical book itself (less than 250 pages with self-publish-style spacing that could be trimmed down to maybe 175 pages on standard novel size). That said, my REVIEW of the book is that it has good action, a popular theme, a good ability to relate to the characteristics of her characters so that seemed believable as described, and parts that were well-researched. I see that the writer has multiple books in this series which means they either learned from their first experience and improved (which I applaud) or they had a reader base that fully supported them in ways separate from my opinion above, in which case they have garnered the right audience and connections, and deserve praise for that as well as that is not easy in this critical world in which we live, and thus, by merit, I believe my 4-star blanket-cover rating to be fair.

Turbulent
I'm a fan of post-apocalyptic stories, even though the subject is becoming a bit exhausted. Most angles have been covered before, and the writer has to come up with something spectacular and yet believable to stand out. The story itself in this book is definitely believable. Very unlikely to happen, but plausible. Would events unfold as described in this story? Personally I believe anarchy would be days or even weeks away, rather than minutes or hours. But it's the author's scenario, which as a reader I have to respect. The main characters are well defined, but could be developed even further. For instance, the main character Maddie appears to have a boyfriend somewhere. Yet, the boyfriend is gets literally two sentences in the story. I get that the core family is more important than someone who she might have only met recently, but a partner would usually get more exposure, or a proper explanation why they are not mentioned more.I'm also missing an explanation why for example certain machinery works, while other doesn't. Having some vehicles work, while most aren't, is a somewhat too convenient way of transporting characters over great distances. The writer has created a certain world, and the reader deserves to know if there are any exceptions to the rules.I understand that this is merely the first book in a series of many. Possibly answers will be given in series. The above comments are small details that wouldn't prevent me from pursuing the series. The book was well written, easy to follow, a good length, and most importantly, it was captivating. I'd like to know what will happen to the characters, so I will continue reading. Hopefully the next book(s) are equally good.

Who is Emma???
I did enjoy the read and will continue to read the series. However, at one point I almost decided not to continue read this current book and abandon the series. I felt that the character, Emma, was not developed as she should have been. It was so very obvious and the majority of this book did not deal with the trauma a small child would experience seeing what she saw first hand in this book. It was if she was a thought of caring enough to take on a child in a serious disaster but there were no indication of the main character ever feeling, observing and conversing frequently with Emma. Hope to see more development of Emma in the next book.

Interesting
The story had a slow start, in fact I came close to returning it without finishing it but I'm glad I didn't. It picked up and free me in to the point I might just read the next one.
