Longer Than Most Shirley Temple Movies
It seemed like it was longer then most Shirley Temple movies . It was supposedly depicted in the old days where Shirley Temple get called Wee Willie Winkie by the sergeant of the Royal Army that dies before the end of the movie.

A solid addition to the John Ford canon
I left this one out of my John Ford collection for a long time, couldn't muster the courage to own a Shirley Temple movie, my mistake. It rewards, never mind the cloying dvd cover. Not just a Temple vehicle, it covers other ground. If chemistry is a major component of a succesful film, the relationship between Miss Temple and Victor McLaglen and the affection elicited by Cesar Romero for the youngster is great cinema. Full of many nice Ford touches; vignettes of interelationships held together during the drama of impending war. (And perhaps to mitigate the Shirley Temple factor, Ford includes a disturbing scene of a mentally defective spy getting tossed from a fortress wall like the day's trash in stark contrast to the heartfelt tenor of the film. Had a jarring memory of watching this as a kid, it's still there.)Yes, Wee Willie Winkie, of all things, deserves a spot in the John Ford library. Good price too.

Good Movie
I've enjoyed this film. It's like Gunga Din meets the Good Ship Lollipop. It could fit in the same genre as Gunga Din, but there isn't as much action as in Din. There is only one song sung by Ms. Temple in the movie, but It's one of my favorite songs. It seems that when the movie was made, the era of the British in India was looked back with some fondness to have movies done about it (as Vietnam era movies were done many years after the fact), but still close enough that some people were still alive to remember "the good old days".. Its a transition film for Ms. Temple as an actress. She isn't any longer the moppet she was in her early films, but was getting into more of a character rather than just singing and dancing.

Directed by America's finest director, John Ford
Wee Willie Winkie, Directed by America's finest director, John Ford, is a military tale of adventure set in Afghanistan of the 1800s. At the center is a little girl who has come to the fort with her mother, because her father has died and there is nowhere else for them to go. Wee Willie Winkie worms her way into the hearts of the hardened soldiers and swell the heart and is bound to bring a tear to your eye by its conclusion. Its a clear example of why miss Temple became an international star.

Great movie and overall I would still watch this DVD ...
Five stars for the movie, four for the quasi-color job. B&W is also offered, but I was thinking this was going to be a real colorized version of Wee Willie Winkie, it is not. Great movie and overall I would still watch this DVD in either B&W or the quasi-color, but don't buy this if you are thinking this will be a colorized version.

At your orders... Miss?
Wee Willie WinkieThe year is 1897 andย widow Joyce Williams (June Lang) is on her way to India with her daughter Priscilla (Shirley Temple). They are staying with Joyce's father Colonel Williams (Aubrey Smith). He doesn't know anything about girls because all he's ever seen is men soldiers marching up and down. Priscilla likes the way soldiers march and decides to become one, thinking this will make her grandfather like her.Sergeant Donald MacDuff (Victor McLaglen) is the only one who believes that Priscilla has what it takes to become a soldier in the army. He gives her the nickname Wee Willie Winkie. The two become very close friends.War breaks out later on and many men are killed or wounded. Sergeant Donald MacDuff sadly passes away from wounds in his chest. Priscilla is heartbroken when she finds out.Priscilla goes in search of Khoda Khan (Cesar Romero), the leader of the Indian army and an escaped prisoner. His people are at war with her grandfather. Can Priscilla convince Khoda Khan and her grandfather to put an end to this war and make peace?Shirley plays a real feminist role in this movie and is very good at marching like a real soldier.

Sentimental but never mawkish
Ford certainly got the best out of Shirley by teaming her up with Victor McLaglen. Its full of action and sentiment and pure Ford, foreshadowing his later U.S.Cavalry trilogy (where he once again cast the then 18 year old Shirley in 'Fort Apache')Of all the Temple movies this is by far the least cloying and most watchable of the bunch!

Rudyard Kippling at his best
I have the VHS version of this film............This DVD is a lot clearer and the sound is very good......but the colour version was very disapointing.......the service was exellant and well worth waiting for . but do understand that it is only region 1........and you must have a multi region dvd player. to play it.
