Great buy
Great for cooking, eating, and backpacking. It rugged unbreakable design is great for packs, and is of higher quality than most other mess kits at a rock bottom price. It metal construction gives it a toughness that few other mess kit can compete with. I love this mess kit and plan to use it more often, though word from the wise mine came covered in a type of grease and you can clean it easily with hot water and soap. Thanks that is all for now!

Order before they aren't available
This is a well made, thick aluminum mess kit. It is heavy duty like other reviews state and should have no issues holding up out in the field or camping. This will come with a very thick layer of a greasy cosmoline type of oil all over it and is difficult to clean but we'll worth it once removed. The grease was for long term storage and did it's job as no aluminum flaking was evident and product looked like it was just made. We'll worth the money, may actually order another before they're unavailable.

Bummer
I had to throw it away after one use. The coating burned off of it. Sort of made it undesirable to put food in.

Good peice of kit, came with some manufacturing defects but didnt harm functionality at all. needs a little pre-prep before use
good product, little rough around the edges, quite litterally and metaphorically. it takes a little prep work before its useable. it comes caked in the grease as it says and this takes a good bit of a soak and a couple washes in detergent. Also some of the rim and other marks from manufacturing needed a touch up with sandpaper for some sharp bits.i noticed the lip on mine, one side is higher but it doesent do anything as far as function it just isnt perfect like a modern replica might be.Which is fine it gives it character, it also came with a couple dents and the loop on the handle wasent squared it got bent in a little but again...none of these effects the functionality this thing was made to be beaten around, it was for soldiers to use afterall for months in the feild being banged around and kicked and rolld on and dropped and whatever else. The aluminum is pretty thick, about half a centimeter just enough to make it very durable and its very light, this is one of the lightest cook kits besides titanium ive ever had.So the use for this. if you dont mind the aluminum problems you can cook in this just fine, just be sure to boil water in it a few times prior to taking it out if your going to cook in it because of all the grease, the pot holds 8 cups of water, the pan or top cover/cup holds 2 cups of waterthe pot is deep and that makes it great if you are a outdoorsman and purify water by boiling because this will definitly fill a entire water bottle.the cup can be slightly awkward when drinking out of but its kinda something you get used to and you can always bring something else with you for your kit.it is bulky this isnt a small kit but these were made to be worn externally on packs or belts and thats exactly what i do with mine most of the time. however even though its large it feels smaller then what its capabilities are and i can really see why this was such a successful design for so long between all the different countries. This actually makes a pretty cool lunch box also when i go out on a fishing trip because i can use the lid for various items and keep it off the ground or not worry about putting them on napkins or other flimsy materiel, not a huge deal jut a neat thing, kept my soda cold for most the day with a standard ice pack though not as good as a cooler but definitly smaller and more convenient if thats what you want to use this for aswell.Overall decent product, every one of them is going to be different and it takes some pre-prep for use but other then that this is a great peice of kit and its my new main cook system with my alchohol stove

Gift-wrapped in grease but well worth the cleanup effort
The mess kit I received was dated 1956. It was covered with a thick layer of what I've seen described by Russian vendors online as "edible oil" but which looks, feels, and smells very much like the cosmoline I've cleaned off most of my Mosin rifles. I was glad for it, though, because a bit of boiling water, detergent, and considerable scrubbing made quick work of it, and now it looks like it was made yesterday. Its dimensions compared to the East German mess kit are practically identical, and that means 16 fluid ounces for the lid/pan and 48 for the pot. I look forward to making many yummy outdoor treats with this rugged piece of history.

Not worth the money
This product came covered in sticky yellow goop that ot everywhere. The lid also has a huge black sticky spot I will have to scrape off. Worst quality I've ever bought on Amazon.

robust construction
I have read reviews commenting on the poor design of these mess kits . It is what it is a robust aluminum billy tin meant to hang over a camp fire. The only concession to convenience being two notches filed into the lid to lock the lid in place using the bail . If you buy it you definitely need a strap to go through the loops provided to keep the top down. Mine came well packed in like new condition. Soviet era factories had Quotas Beginning and middle of production runs good quality , the end not so much. you pays your money , you takes your chances, buying soviet era items. The Soviet army was so ill equipped at one point in WW11 they sent poor Russian soldiers into battle without a weapon expecting them to pick one up on the battlefield from the hands of a dead enemy.....or comrade . A fancy mess kit was probably the least of their concerns.

Love my 1957 mess kit!
Absolutely mint condition. The soviets knew how to prepare for WW3 that hasn't happened yet. This mess kit is mintly restored stamped 1957. Great novelty. Cleaned with WD-40 and several dish soap washes. I haven't used it over a fire yet but it's great for camping dishes. Would buy again if need be.
